Pinnacle Studio 15 review

Update February 22th 2011: new article All about Pinnacle Studio 15

Yes you're not dreaming ! The image above is not the result of a stupid photo-editing.

It is true that for some time, rumors were running especially since the online publication on Avid website's, apparently by mistake, of pages related to Studio 15 (see Is Pinnacle launching Studio 15 ?).

Now it's official, after a year and some months, the successor of Studio 14 will be launched shortly by Avid/Pinnacle. As you know, @ Déclic-Vidéo website, we strive to be always on top for our loyal readers, we had to be the first to test the software and to inform you as soon as possible. Moreover, to always be informed in priority, why not subscribe to our newsletter, it's free ?

First, let's discover the press release.

As for Studio 14, the software comes in three versions : Studio 15 HD $ 59.99, Studio 15 Ultimate HD $ 99.99 and Studio 15 HD Ultimate Collection $ 129.99 :

Versions of S15

So, what's up ? Let's tell you right now, it's not a revolution. Speaking of evolution is more appropriate (additionnal timeline are not present, I prefer to be clear on that point...).

Here his the list of what's new provided by Avid :

  • Enhanced ease of use :
    • Studio 15 Installer welcome screen that indicates installed programs by a checkmark symbol
    • An improved unified import utility for most modern formats and camcorders
    • Improved and stable application performance
    • Improved video preview quality
    • Improved performance of Montage templates
    • Improved performance of Motion Titler while editing titles
  • New archive and restore feature :
    • Archive your projects for safe keeping, storage or to transfer to another system
  • New import format :
    • MKV video file format MKV (.mkv)
  • New export formats :
    • DivX Plus HD
    • QuickTime(MOV) HD
    • AVCHD lite
  • New content for titles, motion titles, montage templates, DVD menus, and sound FX
  • New presets for YouTube upload

Having the chance for a few days to have been able to install Studio 15, we have not yet had time to test everything but we can a little detail the following points :

  • Installation :
The installation procedure is described in our tutorial Pinnacle Studio 14/15 installation.
The novelty is that during progress of the installation, steps already undertaken are checked :
Pinnacle Studio 15 - Installation process
It's more convenient and avoids some of the problems that some users have encountered when installing Studio 14.
  • Plugins transfer :
The tutorial Plugins installation for Studio 14/15 is available. We will publish as soon as possible a new batch file to automate the transfer. Note that with the exception of PE Camera POV, all of which operated under Studio 14 is operating under Studio 15. So far, SmartSound is still not supported. Bad news...
  • On our test machine the opening of Studio 15 is about 25% faster than Studio 14 in the same configuration.
  • After some tests we confirm that Motion Titler finally seems more stable.
  • Project archive and restore feature :
This innovation creates an archive in which the project will be copied and a copy of all media used in the project (excepted menus, effects, Scorefitter,...). This avoids problems when a media has been removed from your hard drive, renamed or moved. In addition, it allows to re-open the project on another computer from the moment you have transfered the archive.
Pinnacle Studio 15 - Archive project

Regarding the long-awaited correction of bugs in Studio 14, particularly those escalated to Pinnacle through our What's up in Studio?, we must recognize that we are left hungry. Just, did we note that the systematic return to Menu 1 when there were on timeline returns to other menus had been corrected.

For other bugs, we will wait to have more time to test and see what has been corrected. But for sure, the treatment of AVCHD seems to be still too slow, we assume that the current controversy over the delay that Studio takes on some software competitor is not ready to die !

What's your opinion ???

Hoping they stabilise the pan and zoom in Studio 15. At the moment if you zoom into any image the slide goes black, so annoying.

Let them improve using MOV clips! I render my staff in Juicer and always have been decoding the clip again into AVI by other coders!!! Why this stupi program does not read all MOV clips, like all other software does without ANY problems: Sony Vegas, Adobe AE, Premiere, Edius...

I was hoping this basic lack as well as dynamic timelines progressions will be finally fixed! (why we can not have for instance 99 tracks available!???)

AVID - please make a right, expected product finally!!!!!!!

I am excited to see a new version, even with its limitations. I have been hoping for more archiving features like the ability to log names and places when copying my old videos onto my external hard drive.

This merely serves to confirm what was said previously on the French website and what I said on the "A competitor for Pinnacle" thread: "it appears that S15 still won't be 64-bit. For that, you'd need Avid's own-branded Studio at €169.95 apparently - and the question I'd be asking is: will Pinnacle Studio users be able to buy an upgrade to Avid Studio or will we have to pay the full price?!"
Yes, it seems that AVID Studio will be 64-bit - but PINNACLE Studio 15 will continue to plod along with very little improvement on its 32-bit predecessor. Ho hum...

It ticks me off to no end that Avid can not get it through there thick skulls that they are going to be left behind in the prosumer and consumer market. If they don't sit there developers down and look at the competition and exceed and excel in developement of a product to blow the competition away, why the hell do you even want to be in the market???

Cyberlink PD9 is awsome in the 64 bit version. It is not the "best" but it has features that make Studio look like a high school computer project. What gives AVID??? You have the power, money and presumably the talent, take the damned amrket by storm and kick the competitions butt!

I like Studio! i have SV12U. I would like MORE BANG for the BUCK! GIVE US MORE USEFULL FEATURES AT A "REASONABLE" PRICE. Give us more frexibility, SOUND equalization, faster "ALLWAYS" reliable rendering, more professionable and less amateur templates and menus, more tracks both audio and video, etc .... I could go on and on.

AVID you wanted Pinnacle. You bought em! Put your damned money and talent to work! GIVE US SOMETHING TO WORK WITH. GIVE US THE POWER AND TOOLS "WE" AMATEURS WOULD KILL TO HAVE. WE CAN"T AFFORD YOUR HIGH END PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS. I wish I could but, I can't. HOWEVER, I would certainly pay a "FAIR" price for a product with the features and capabilities I need and want to make the video and films I desire. Why don't you put out a SURVEY to Studio Users and ASK them What they need AND want??? Don't sit there and just assume we will be happy with drips and drops of product changes you think will make us happy. Just ask us. we would be more than happy to tell you.

Until then I will keep my hard earned money in my pocket and keep using S12U. I'll wait until you think out of the box and take the market by the balls. If not, I'll play the waiting game for a true 64 bit program that not only works, but screams innovation and usefullness.

You are damn right 'Wellnow1101'
Pinnacle sucks in comparision to nowadays software issued for semi-profis
x64, tracks, rendering, and many more, but... they never did listen to forums and wishing list. AS well as Corel, I was reading the forum of Corel Videostudio and there was the same, no support, no product according to people needs and suggestions. Weird thing is, that market of amateurs is so naive and anyway many people will buy the product, even it is so poor and lack of usefull options!
Well, I switched do Adobe, have bought in special educational way and even it is hard to learn, I will be more than happy with my projects and hundreds of Tutorials and Templates available, with my productions than all the time complaining to Pinnacle/Avid (and pay - from version 9 to 12 - that's enough!)

I have been running Studio 14 on my computer (HP, Vista, AMD Phenom (tm) 9550 Quad-core processor at 2.2 GHz) I have been working on HD videos and it works fine (perhaps a bit slow). My question is, if I upgrade to Avid Studio would I have problem running HD videos?

I tried the Avid and the Pinnacle sites, but I could not get to a place where help about this issue wa available. The "Requirement" section for Avid Studio cites a number of processors but no direct help.

Thanks

When I opened Pinnacle Studio tonight, I was greeted with an advertisement headed "INTRODUCING AVID STUDIO", the new Avid-branded version of Pinnacle Studio, and an offer to upgrade to it at the reduced price of £79.95. The spec for Avid Studio puts emphasis on its HD capabilities and shows it to be 64-bit compatible. In fairness, the Avid site also mentions the upgrades to S15 - but this obviously remains the poor 32-bit relation.

I wonder whether S15 will be the last Studio to be branded Pinnacle. Clearly, Avid are trying to persuade S14 users to move to Avid Studio. After my unhappy experiences with both S14 UC and Cyberlink's PowerDirector 9, maybe I'll be one of them!

So "AVID Studio" is presumably what most people in this forum would prefer... I hope that it is just a rebranding of "Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Collection Premium", in a hope to charge more money. Otherwise my investment in learning Mercalli, Boris Graffiti, RedGiant, etc., starts to be worth less.

If it is substantially different, then I am not happy.

Having done a bit more digging, I'm now pretty certain that Avid take the view that Pinnacle Studio is aimed at beginners and Avid Studio at more advanced users.

They look more or less the same but Avid Studio is 64-bit compatible and has unlimited timeline tracks (whoopee!); it has lots of RedGiant stuff but Boris Graffiti is not supported. There's no ProDAD either - but you can buy upgrades to ProDAD VitaScene and Adorage.

Someone asked about SmartSound: apparently, there's always been some sort of workaround for S14 users but, for both S15 and Avid Studio, you can buy a SmartSound Sonicfire Plug-In - see here
The Avid website has a lot of useful info. For example, take a look at:

* Studio 15 and Avid Studio comparison

* Avid Studio Compatibility with Previous Studio Version Content

Well ... it seems there is NO reason to wait impatiently for S15. Still no 64bit, still slow performance with moderne video footage (AVCHD) ... I will stick to my new friend Cyberlink Powerdirector 64 bit. THAT defines the standard and just simply provides plain performance!!

After the hassles I went thru with tech support on the 14 upgrade I am not so sure I am going to rush right out and get it. I still have heard nothing on the 3d capability in any studio product yet. As far as the MOV extensions I can't understand why they don't move forward and utilize that format as well. Considering the price they are asking and the bugs I bought with the 14 upgrade I think I will just hold off and stay with what I have even if it means bouncing from editor to editor. At least I know what works and what doesn't now. I don't have have time to re-school myself with a whole new set of bugs.

Pinnacle is meant to be a consumer application. For backward compatibility it must stay 32 bit.Not everyone lives and breathes the latest technology.I however would rather pay for a reasonable upgrade than start all over again elsewhere, and guess what ?

THANKS TO THE "DECLIC VIDEO" ASSISTANCE AND SUGGESTIONS I MANAGED AT LAST TO DOWN LOAD THE PINNACLE STUDIO 15 ULTIMATE AND ULTIMATE COLLECTION.......... I HAVE TO BE SINCERE TO ALL OF YOU AND PARTICULARLY TO THE AVID COMPANY (PINNACLE STUDIO).... THE FOLLOWING TYPED BY ME THE OTHER DAY IS DUE TO MY MISTAKE

SOCRATES, THE ANCIENT GREEK PHILOSOPHER POINTED OUT THAT (ΓΗΡΑΣΚΟΥΜΕ ΑΕΙ ΔΙΔΑΣΚΟΜΕΝΟΙ (GIRASKOUME AE (AEI, A-I -) DIDASKOMENOI = WE ARE GETTING MORE AND MORE OLDER AND BEING LEARN, WE LIVE AND LEANR

THE FOLLOWING INSTALLATION MISTAKE HAPPENED BECAUSE BETWEEN THE TWO DOWNING LOADING FILES THERE (PINNACLE ... 1 OF 2 AND 2 OF 2) THERE WERE, BY MISTAKE, THE FIRST DOWNING FILE............. BIG MISTAKE......THE TWO FILES MUST BE DOWNLOADED IN A RAW, THE ONE (1 OF 2) FIRST AND THEN, IMMEDIATELY NEXT (WITHOUT INTERFERING ANY OTHER FILES) THE SECOND ONE (PINNACLE ....2 OF 2.dat............

I AM STILL NOT SURE IF THAT EXTENSION (ENDING) PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE TO THE DOWNLOAD VIA THE AKAMY DOWLOADER.....

ANY WAY, I DECIDED TO DOWNLOAD BOTH OF THE FILES BY CLICKING "NEXT" BEFORE THE AKAMY DOWNLOADING PROCEDURE BEGINS......... AND THAT WAS IT.......... A PERFECT INSTALLATION OF A NEW PINNACLE VIDEO MAKING SOFTWARE WHICH I HAVE BEEN USING SINCE THE RELEASE OF PINNACLE STUDIO 11

A NUMBER OF STEPS FORWARD INDEED. PERSONALLY I EXPECTED MORE ELEMENTS AFTER ONE AND A HALF YEARS OF THE PS14.

THE ABSENCE OF THE BORRIS GRAFFITI AND THE PRODAD SOFTWARES (ADORAGE, HIEROGLYPHS E.T.C) ARE OBVIOUS. IT IS VERY SIMPLE TO IMPORT THEM MANUALLY........... FROM THE PREVIOUS VERSES...... YOU ARE ASKED IN THE DOWNLOAD PROCEDURE WHERE (IN WHICH RELEASE OF PINNACLE YOU WISH TO INSTALL THEM.............. BY DEFAULT THEY COME FOR THE INSTALLATION TO THE PS 12. SIMPLY YOU CHANGE THEM TO PS 15.............

PARTICULARLY, REGARDING THE BORRIS GRAFFITI 3.4.5 (3D AND 4 D) I AM RUNNING A TRIAL VERSION OF IT IN THE PINNACLE STUDIO 15. IT IS REALLY FAR BEYOND (FROM) ANY EXPECTATIONS OR IMAGINATIONS OF MINE REGARDING THE INNUMEROUS TRANSITIONS AND EFFECTS.......... IT RUNS PERFECTLY ON (IN) THE PINNACLE 15, VERY FAST INDEED BUT IT IS VERY EXPENSIVE............. 299 AMERICAN DOLLAR OF EUROS.......... FOR A SINGLE SOFTWARE REFERRING TO THE NOTIONAL TITLES, FILTERS, EFFECTS AND TRANSITION, I RECKON VERE FEW OF US CAN AFFORD SUCH A HIGH PRICE.
AS TO THE "DECLIC VIDEO" FIRST IMPRESSION ABOVE REGARDING THE PINNACLE STUDIO 15 I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH THEM

BEST WISHES TO ALL OF YOU

I would like to have some of your opinions and/or guesses.
If I am using PS14 and working with HD video, would I still be able to work with the HD video if I upgrade to AVID Studio without having to "upgrade" my computer?

I agree with most of you that the PS15 upgrade is almost a "patch" and if anything it should be FREE.

TO MY WAY OF THINKING AND ACCORDING TO THE INSTALLATION PROGRAMS OF THE PINNACLE STUDIO 1ULTIMATE AND ULTIMATE COLLECTION (WHICH RUNS IN BOTH 32 BIT AND 64 BIT MACHINES) THERE WILL BE NO PROBLEMS AT ALL REGARDING THE HD ISSUE. NEVERHTELESS THE MOST RESPONSILBE PEOPLE TO COMPLETELY REPLEY (TO) THIS QUESTION IS THE RELEVANT GROUP OF THE PINNACLE STUDIO 15 OF AVID.

ADOBE AFTER EFFECTS CS 5 WHICH RECENTLY RELEASED IT (A VERY NICE VIDEO MAKIING SOFTWARE DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT HAS DIRECT ACCESS TO THE PHOTOSHOP CS 5.............. Although not entirely trouble free, I don't have the instability problems with S14 that other users often bemoan. However, I agree that S15 is not an attractive upgrade as it offers very little to get excited about over S14.

I do suspect though that Avid have deliberately marketed S15 in such a way that current users of S12/S14 will be more attracted to Avid Studio and head that way. I for one would be interested in trying Avid Studio, but I can't as they do not provide a trial version for download, and unless I can try it first I will not buy it. Does anyone know why there no trial version for Avid Studio?

When i upgraded to Pinnacle studio 14, it loaded onto my PC, separate from Pinnacle stidio 12. ie I can work either program. I have the download version of studio 15 ultimate collection and its working 100% better than studio 14. All the faults I have experienced in studio 14 since launch have been corrected. My only complaint is I cant see any difference between studio 14 and 15 ultimate collection. I have the same montages, titles, transitions (no extra ones) it looks like studio 15 is an expensive upgrade to studio 14 or even a patch with all the reported problems corrected.

NEEDLESS TO SAY THAT THE EXTRA PAID PLUG - INS DEPEND ON EACH ONE WALLET
AS THE TIME GOES BY EVERYTHING CHAMGED DRAMATICALLY FAST. TO BE ON BUSINESS (SOFTWARE BUSINESS) IS NOT EASY NOWADAYS.
AS I CAN SEE ALMOST THE NEW PROGRAMS (SOFWARES) AND HARDWARES ARE TOWARD TO 64 BIT (MACHINES AND OPERATING SYSTEMS)
THE AVID PINNACLE WHICH RUNS ON 64 BIT MACHINES SEEMS TO BE SOMETHING DIFFERENT. IT WILL BE AVAILABLE FROM ABOUT 11 OF MARCH BY DOWLOADING WAY AND IN APRIL IN A PACKAGE

This software is remarkably STABLE!!!
I have been a longtime user of Pinnacle Studio and while they have always accelled at making the most intuitive and easy to use software but their software always has been so sensitive that you were forced to constantly save your work and break projects up into smaller ones so that it would crash as frequently. Im not a pro movie maker but i would consider myself to be a home movie power user and i have only been able to crash Studio 15 ONCE so far and im almost done with a 45 minute movie and its a single project. And im not sure it was a crash but rather my fault for closing it and opening without giving it time to shutdown properly.
Anyway, buy with confidence, Studio 15 is quite possible the best and most stable software i have seen in a while to make movies.
The only issue i have with it is that previewing the movie some times video gets choppy or stutters. May be because my pc isnt that new. But if anyone has this problem and knows any solutions please post them.
BTW, i already tried changing the play back codec to best for preview and that didnt help.

Graham I am confused I have changed to studio 15 ultimate collection because studio 14 would not work on my pc. You dont get any extra tracks with V 15 infact you get very little for your money (other than its more stable) I suggest you save your money and stick with studio 14 if its working ok on your pc.If you want more tracks you should look at avid studio its due out in March

Bandl you are correct it is AVID Studio that I am trying.Lesson one.READ the instructions for the download. If you click on everything under download you will corrupt the download.Way down the page are the download instructions. You should only have to use the downloader, the first download on the list. You ONLY click on the other items if you do not use the download app.that Avid supplies. So if when you click on the .exe file and it asks you for the next disc your file is probably corrupt. Back to magic bullet,I found that turning off my services allowed it to open.So now I have to figure out which service doesn't like the Looks Builder.I used the pixie supplied by microsoft that Avid recommends. This does not apply to XP you have to go in through tools or task manger(I believe you can go to run and enter sysconfig) to get to the services and process page.I am a newbie so if there is a better way or I explained it wrong please correct me. Hopefully I can tell you how happy I am tomorrow.

Once the download was finished it took apx. 40 min. to install.15-20 min.was used while AVID reconfigured windows.I was missing the direct x component and some other Microsoft utility. After looking at it,oh it is sooo sexy,I concluded that this is a semi-pro app..If your are looking to edit vacation movies and slide shows than Studio 15 is more than enough. If however you are a amateur movie maker,or event videographer getting started this is what you are looking for. They brought back the media library that S10 had(not the same one).Where the drop down menus appeared is now a library with tabs for all operations.i.e.Effects are listed by type not Brand.Unlimited video tracks, volume and balance controls are on the time line tracks themselves.More later.I spent most of the night doing housekeeping on my machine and had to go to bed before the sun came up.Avid investing in Pinnacle is bearing fruits now,of course ,knock on wood,I haven't started using it yet.

Graham, perhaps you could post your comments about Avid Studio in the 'All-About-Avid-Studio' forum.

I'd really appreciate it if you could answer the question I left there. Ooooh! I can't wait to get hold of the trial version of Avid Studio!

Hi rami,

Yes you can, but if in doubt you can download a trial version here. I had S14 Ultimate and S15 Ultimate concurrently on my PC with no problems, but have decided to go with Avid Studio.

However, before you go ahead with S15, have a look at my comment about value for money in the 'All-About-Avid-Studio' forum (All About Avid Studio).

I am a complete newbie to this videoediting game but I was so impressed by the 30 day free trial version of Studio 15 that
last week I dug deep for the $99 to purchase the full version and
extra content.

Since installing it I have had nothing but frustration. Looking at several
forum comments, some of these problems appear to have been unresolved for several months.

Here is what I have had to contend with so far:

1. I edited my first film with the trial version and was very happy
with the intuitive, easy to use editing functions, including the titles and
(limited) sound effects available. Occasionally there was a glitch where I
could only see a green screen, but that was usually solved by closing and
restarting.

2. The moving titles seemed to work OK and appeared as designed on the
final edited version.

3. However I had trouble with burning the movie to a DVD. Each time I
pressed the 'make movie' function the disc ejected. I wasn't sure if that
was due to a faulty disc or not, but wondered if it was necessary to buy the
full version of Studio 15 before that final step was available. However,
once I had installed the full version of Studio 15 (and inserted a different
disc) I was able to burn the movie. EXCEPT that the moving titles now
appeared on the green screen and not over the top of the intended scene.

4. I went back to the editing function and tried to fix the green
screen problem but couldn't.

5. Then I tried to edit out a couple of scenes from the video track. I
deleted two shots but then I wasn't allowed to pull back the subsequent
scenes to close the few seconds of gap. The red 'forbidden' indicator
appeared, along with the message that "[my file name] Pinnacle Studio
Ultimate is not enabled for PAL'. (Yes, all tracks were unlocked and the
Setup/Project preferences was set to PAL standard.) I did seem to be still
able to edit the sound track and title track. (I am in Australia wheer we use the PAL standard)

6. So I tried to find some more material from my C Drive or D drive to
fill the gap, but guess what? The Import function could not 'see' these
other source files. I have not yet discovered how to get back to my library
sources and import them. (Have since tried again but cannot import anything or open even my edited film withou getting the PAL error message.)

7. I did manage to change some moving titles for fixed titles, but
that's hardly an answer is it, if the whole moving title function is not
operating properly.

I find this all so frustrating since I thought the software was brilliant
before and now it won't let me do the basics.

PS 8. I contacted Avid support, they asked me for my serial numbers or installation keys and I have heard nothing else since from them.

I've just purchased Studio 15 basic version ($60). It's taken my brilliant HD photos and turned them into garbage (low resolution) in order to create a "movie". I'm better off just playing music from a CD player and showing my photos in High-definition the old fashioned way. I'm afraid to give Pinnacle any more money at this point.

I had so much trouble with V.14 downloading movies from my JVC HD Handicams. Works brilliantly with my old Sony Hi8. Unwilling to buy V.15 if that issue isn't resolved. I really don't want to move out of my 3 JVC Everio cameras and buy perhaps Sny justso I can easily edit my movies.

I HAVE BEEN PURCHASING ALMOST ANY NEW VERSION OF STUDIO SINCE IT BEGUN, BUT I NOTICE EVERYTIME THAT THERE ARE LESS AND LESS CHANGES FROM VERSION TO VERSION, AND IF YOU NEED SOMETHING EXTRA, ITS A MATTER OF PURCHASING A NEW DISK TO COMPLEMENT THIS OR THAT PART OF THE ORIGINAL NEW PROGRAM. AT THE END YOU SPENT A SMALL FORTUNE JUST TO HAVE A MEDIOCRE PRODUCT. CUSTOMER SERVICE GIVES YOU A REAL BAD SERVICE OR ADVISE. THEY TELL YOU THAT SOME PRODUCTS ARE RETURNABLE WHEN THEY ARE NOT. ALL ANSWERS ARE GENERATED AUTOMATICALLY, EVEN THOSE FOR YOUR COMPLAINS...
I DON'T RECOMMEND YOU THIS PROGRAM, IS JUST A WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME

Ok, I purchased S15 Ultimate last week, I have been with Pinnacle since S9. I post this to warn anyone with a SONY HD Camera. I have the HDR-SR7. I am running W7 with Core i7 & 4gb Ram. Anyway, there is a major problem for Sony cameras (and probably others) The first time I used it I loaded a 20 min project, around 14 clips. So far so good, then I get this machine gun / Helicopter audio problem, completely drowns out the video audio. I have contacted Avid and they admit there is a problem, what's more there is no workaround within S15. Another load of hard earned money down the drain. I have never installed Pinnacle software yet that actually works first time! If I could get my money back (no chance) I would go for the Avid x64 version. Does anyone know if I can download a trial?

I too have been a Pinnacle Studio user for ever but I have to tell you that Avid Studio is light years ahead. To use an good old English expression: it's the dog's b******s! It worked first time for me (64-bit PC), although I use a Panasonic HD camcorder, not Sony. I have recently completed a complex 30-minute DVD with hundreds of transitions and effects, and every gizmo was spot on! Now I'm about to start editing 75gb of footage taken on a four-week overseas trip - wish me luck!!

There's a 30-day trial version of Avid Studio available

Keep smiling!

Cooling Dont be fobbed off from Pinnacle You can get your money back. Avid studio is 100% better than pinnacle 14,15 and you can get a free trial download. If you cant find it ask pinnacle support.
I have had problems ever since upgrading from studio 12. V14 never worked from the begining it would not install and I spent the best part of 12 months talking to pinnacle support in the end I gave up untill V 15 came along I tried the trial version and this worked so I asked pinnacle for a refund on V 14 or exchange to V 15 they agreed to the exchange. However after loading HD video files of about a hours run time the program started to behave the same as V 14 Pinnacle they suggested I try Avid this I did and again they exchanged the software.
I hope this helps

I since I have version 14 I am very happy, I use Pinnacle since version 8, edit in HD with no problems, and I will not change to 15 or Avid, I think it's a waste of money, with version 14 I have no problems of both quality as the time to put all kinds of plugins, here one can see two videos with excellent quality and the other with all sorts of plugins and I have no problem with flow

Cooling, I used to use S14 and tried a trial version of S15 but thought it little better. Then I went for Avid Studio and as others here have said, it's much, much better. I use Avid to produce my own home videos and professionally in production of promotional videos. I find is stable and there's not much it can't do. Go for Avid, it's really good.

Update: I downloaded trial version of Avid Studio, and guess what? Same problem - stuttering audio! I have uninstalled it, I am uninstalling S15, and contacted Pinnacle / Avid for refund. I will return to S11 Ultimate for now, and look around for editing software that actually works!
Thank you for your suggestions.

Cooling: I have never had stuttering audio with Avid Studio and use it for editing AVCHD files, some recorded on a Sony camcorder and some on a Panasonic camcorder.

The problem you describe is probably more to do with your PC (software or hardware) than with the video editor. Avid does actually work and it works well for me. Your processor is more than adequate, although 6GB of RAM is recommended for HD work (although my PC only has 4GB). Do you have an on-board soundcard or a separate one? Are the drivers up to date? Do you have other software running that competes with your PC's resources?

Having used Avid Studio there is no way I'd ever go back to Pinnacle Studio anything.

Pinnacle 14 was great but Avid Studio is way better. It is great, fast and has so much to offer. Upgrading to Avid was the best thing ever. Running it on a Modern PC (intel i7 860@2.80 GHz, windows 7, Nvidia sound card, 8 G Ram) no problems at all even with Sony HD video files. Had some initial problems but fixed with the first patch released.

I have been using Pinnacle since version 4. After few version upgrades over time I gave up with frustration because of unreliable performance. I switched to PowerDirector. It is basic but reliable.
I bought Pinnacle 15 yesterday but reading some of the reviews, it looks like the unreliability saga continues. I am afraid I many decide to return it as I have not even opened it.
Any comments from any one who has long experience with Pinnacle!

Hi Sunnet,

Forget Pinnacle Studio and go for Avid Studio instead, it's far, far better. I used to use Pinnacle Studio versions 11, 12 and 14, then tried 15 but thought that little better than 14. I also tried Power Director but found that unreliable, and the rendering with high definition files was full of artefacts.

Have a look at the All About Avid Studio section of this website.

Sunset - I returned S15 to Avid and they gave me a full refund, I am now quiet happy with S14 Ultimate which does not have the stuttering audio of S15. I have been with Pinnacle for a long time, and to be fair, it does only seem to be a problem with some Sony cameras, I hope they get it sorted soon with S15. I would advise downloading the trial, giving it a good work out, at least then if you find problems you can return your unopened S15 to Avid and get a refund.
Good Luck!

I would highly recommend AVID STUDIO.I have had no problems with it.It even has a function for relinking media for cases like yours where you have moved the data.It does work a little different but the learning curve is not as steep as learning a whole new NLE.You may not need or use all of the features but at the least you are buying stability while staying under a few hundred dollars.IMHO I think a lot of these issues come from the "customized" OS that comes on many pre-built machines. Why should I have to go into sysconfig to get a plug in to work?Maybe we could take an informal poll to see if there is a difference in the performance of Studio with a pre-installed OS as opposed to an self installed OS.

I hope other people weigh in on this.If this turns out to be the case it could be recommended to change the OS for people who have stability problems. In other words maybe it's not Pinnacles fault.

Graham I wish you keep your comments in the Avid Studio section . In this section we dont want Avid Studio remarks ! Pinnacle Studio 14/15 is very stable with Windows XP which many of us still have and are quite satisfied with it . Yes upgrades in Hardware such as Ram . Hard Drive , Video Card may have to be made to carry all the new influxes that Pinnacle Studio has provided and I mean lets face it there is a huge Computer demand issue between Pinnacle Studio 5 and Pinnacle Studio 14/15 ! A requirement match has to be made between Hardware and Software and Software installation should be accordingly . Sometimes the Bells and Whistles are too overpowering .

I have never felt so screwed purchasing a software program in my life. Am going to rebox it and burn it! Two major isses: The quality of the video went down in PS-15 and the quality of my digital still shots went way down even though I cropped them to the 600x600 PS-15 wants (based on the background images of the text screens.

Switched over to Arcsoft MediaImpressions and am very happy. The first test video was just as sharp as what I recorded. MI lacks the capabilities of PS-15 but at least the overall video is not CRAP!

I did not experience any quality problems editing HD video in v14 or v15 but found them both un-usable so changed to avid studios this works ok. It took me over 2 years to get the software that worked from the launch of studio 14 through to studio 15 then to avid studio. Make sure you get your money back I only paid for v14 pinnacle exchanged this for v15 and then for avid studio

I pestered the technical line for month after month and did everything they told me to try. I then downloaded the trial version of v15 this looked ok so I persuaded them to swap v14 to v15. Unfortunately when I started to edit a longer video this was no better than v14. By then Avid studio was out and again I tried the free trial version this worked pinnacle/avid made me sign a form to say that I would not use v15 and they then provided me with the full Avid studio software. I think the reason Avid worked over the pinnacle is that it supported 64bit.
You must pester the help line with live chats and emails I must have nearly 100 messages and it took nearly 2 years.
