Vignette news PS17 ... perhaps.

Update 30.10.2013: Pinnacle Studio 17 has been officially launched and is available for download. More information in our article: Pinnacle Studio 17 : review and first impressions

Update October 26 2013: check our new article: All about Pinnacle Studio 17

Update September 4, 2013: my favorite watch dog program has detected an update on "HOME page" of Pinnacle website... This usually happens a few weeks before a major information, as they are preparing the home page in the background for the news (a new Pinnacle Studio 17 ?)... It is transparent to users, but a piece of code change on the page, and I get an alert that tells me that the page has been updated ... Let's wait and see, it may be a false alarm, but it is the second alert in 1 month ... And you, do you have any preference for Pinnacle 17 ? Any preferred features ?

Previous news (8 august 2013): Yes, I know, the process is a bit dodgy but I could not resist the temptation. angel If you believe the email registered users of Pinnacle are currently receiving it smells great commercial cleaning before the release of a new version. 40% off throughout the store, it would be silly not to enjoy!

I hope so. And I hope that besides bug fixes, some real prosumer stuff is added. Multicam, dynamic timewarping, OpenCL support, better multi-cpu support, motion tracking, a real titler with no fuzz, etc....

Some of those items are already included.I would like to see a 64 bit version with scopes or some other way of matching levels between scenes,i.e. color balance and brightness levels.

One other item.I don't know where to post this...I just got a LEAP controler. It allows the use of ten fingers to control your computer. It creates a field in front of your screen that at the least allows it to mimic a touch screen.Right now the control is mostly point and click as no one has an app for it to control Studio 16 per se.There is one for Maya so it is possible and I am waiting for a response from a game developer as they have an app for mapping game controls to it.Once again this allows you to use your fingers to control your computer like in the movie "Minority Report".

Waiting in anticipation
I hope they are considering upgrading the program to a semi professional level. Multi-cam editing, motion tracking and automatic audio syncing and polishing up the title graphics to 100% HD would be nice.
64 bit operating systems have been around for years and with Microsft only producing 64 bit OS, the continual growth of HD video - Go Pro are 2.2 and 4 K now, this product should be a least 64 bit operating system to make full use of multi core CPU, GPU and Ram.

Here's hoping this one's not a fizzer.

@videoman... my "feature requests" have basically been the same since Avid Studio. While this program now is a cut above the other consumer NLE's, there is a big gap between PS16 and say Edius and even Magix Pro. If they offered semi pro features, they would attract a larger group of people. Have a consumer version (Plus and Ultimate. HD is a waste) and a more upscale one for those that need multicam, etc.. But I think this falls on deaf ears....

@TonyP... I hear you loud and clear Tony. What these people have to understand is that a vast number of us have been using their program for a long time (me since Studio MP1) and upgrade because we have to or want to.
Our editing ability is no longer basic and we want to do more.
Studio** caters to varying skills by offering different variations to the public, but their idea of advanced and what we want as advanced is two different things.
When Avid Studio was released, I thought thank goodness, they're starting to listen, We have a new interface and extra time lines, but err, hello.. How about some "Real" features.
Put them in and you'll gain more consumers instead of losing them.

@videoman.... there can be a scalable version if they want. Someone can upgrade and unlock the more prosumer features or look to Corel's not too bad VideoStudioPro. I fondly remember Liquid (used since v5.5). That was a killer app that Avid killed because it could do what Media Composer could do for much much less. Not saying all the features (networking, etc) were needed, but "NexGen" (Avid Studio) was suppose to be a replacement for it with scaled back features. WRONG! A good program, but one just above Studio. It was a far far drop from Liquid....

I agree with Tony P. . I know a former beta tester for AVID and when they killed Liquid he was beta testing what became Studio 16 and it had more pro features in his beta version. To him it appeared to be a replacement for Liquid, and then I guess AVID got cold feet and sold it off.I work in the pro audio world and they sold off all of their consumer oriented products at the same time both to raise and save money. They weren't per-pared for the consumer service they had to provide.Perhaps this is the issue of ramping a consumer program up to a pro-sumer level

Yes, I used Liquid as well. It came with a capture card and break out box. Used fire wire and composite connections. It was a complex program when compared to Studio. It was on par with Adobe Premiere. It could do so much.

I used the Pro BOB, and Liquid, which was more inline with Media Composer than Premiere. But Avid wanted to kill it. It was just as good as Media Composer but much much cheaper.
I thought that we would lose the networking and a few other things, but I didn't think it would be like this. Not that Avid Studio and PS16 are bad. It's just that a lot of the features that prosumers would use were totally removed. :(

I think they would consider to make this program real competitive! I used to work till version 12 and then I gave up. I switched to Adobe Premiere/After Effects and now, for quick and simple editing I recommend to make this program with features which are a must:
- full format input (without any stupid additional import dashboard); just let uset to select the clip MOV (!!!), FLV, MP4, any of full HD and put it onto the track
- 64-bit is obvious - I would even recommend to foget the 32-bit at all as for video editing is just wasting the time (let such users make their work with Corel or any other software)
- subtitle editor (like Corel released in VSX6) but with lots of improvements!
- full-range of plugins compatibile with the newest Studio (Boris, RedGiant, and many others) - with respect ProDAD is... well, poor and antic
- last but not least - quicker GUI and rendering! No more crazy clip rendering after every change on track, just the frame! Otherwise I will definatelly not upgrade (still have valid registration)

Good luck, Corel! Am wondering what would you do with two video editors, which you kill or promote to professional level: Videostudio X... or (former Pinnacle) Studio .... ? :)

@Honorius, I guess you have not tried PS16. You can put all the supported file codecs on the same timeline or anywhere within the project. Again, judging by what you posted, you have not compared this product with the "fastest" NLE on the market. It renders faster. Agreed with Subtitle editor. As for a full range of plugins available, I agree. But it is up to the plugin people to make it available, not PS16. The SDK for this can be obtained by them. Red Giant is already included in PS16 Ultimate. Boris Graffiti can be added also. NewBlueFX used to make plugins for Pinnacle, but it is their decision not to release them now. Since you do not know how PS16 works, you can set the Preview Optimization to full rendering clips (even when not needed) all the way down to no rendering except on export. There is background rendering so that you continue to work while something is rendering. GUI is purely subjective.
Since the last version you used was S12, there have been a lot of changes since then. And look what you are using for comparison.... how much did Premiere and After Effects cost you compared to Studio?
Right now, Corel's VideoStudioPro is a decent product. But Pinnacle Studio 16 is a step up. Hopefully, Corel will continue to have the product "step up" from where it is now. And unless you have used it, you don't fully understand where it is at.

..also remember that this is only a version 2 software. Premiere has been around a very long time. There are some features that I would like to see included soon that would bring this software up to a prosumer level. Right now, it is a very advanced consumer application. The trial version is PS16 Plus. I use the Ultimate version, which has unlimited a/v tracks and includes Red Giant plugins.

+1 for TonyP, I fully agree with your remarks. Please Honorius, compare the latest version of each product, it's like if you were comparing Studio 12 with Studio 7... Quite a difference !

Keep us informed of your test. What makes me happy: you still continue to follow us through the newsletter and participating in the comments, which means that you are still attracted by proDAD/Pinnacle products...

Sorry Guys, I checked my box on the shelf, and I discovered I had PS15 not 12 as recent installed on old computer... And after having been disappointed to the speed and video files formats incompatibility decided to switch to other products. I tested many of NLEs (don't want to promote their names here). But after that, I invested money for CS4 (bought in States as occasionally sale-out product) and have became really surprised. It took quite a time to learn AE&P and the process is neverendig as one should have 365/7/24 focused on them to be a Master :)))))))
For simple and quick projects PS should be enough, I agree, but still, needs improvements and I am wondering Corel's policy in the field.

Yes, I still follow (sometimes) the forum to see the news :)

Cheers!

The interface is similar between S12 and S15 (which is end of life). PS16 it totally different. It started life in the developmental stage as a replacement for Avid Liquid, a direct Media Composer competitor that cost 1/3rd less. Avid killed Liquid. A few years later, Avid Studio was released. A huge step up in flexibility and features over Studio. Avid sold their consumer division to Corel. Corel came out with Pinnacle Studio 16, which would have really been Avid Studio v2.0. I use it and happen to like it (being a forum Liquid user). There are a few features I would like to see, and am hoping that Corel will continue to improve this program. Since Avid Studio, I have not touched S15. If you are familiar with multitrack editing, working with PS16 will be easy. It's just figuring out where things are located.

Pinnacle used to be a great name. I used their ProOne product 10 years ago but they sold their company. As a prosumer videographer I want software on perpetual license that replaces Premiere CC without cloud activation or monthly commitments. Pinnacle has a great chance to mop up disillusioned Adobe customers with a stable editing software that works in 64 bit, incorporates multiple track and multicam editing and uses less memory. Incorporating NVIDIA or ATI gpu cores will add to performance gains. I hope they have done their homework to release a product that can be compared with Premiere Pro and Edius.

While I would have loved to have Avid Liquid without the networking features and updated codecs, I don't think that it will happen. The price range of PS16 is squarely in the consumer range. Competitive in price to the other brands. I would not mind paying more if the "more" was prosumer functionality, not more "bling".
Now, would someone be willing to pay Edius, Vegas Pro, etc., price for a Pinnacle product? I don't think so. But there is a big gap between those "pro" products and the consumer products. A space PS16 could fill in the future.

Pinnacle Studio 17 / Avid Studio 3, with all capacities of Media Composer 7... jk jk.
But it would have technology for rays or installed that plugin. Also 2K and 4K and be able to import and play RMP videos/alpha effects. Many of the montage applications are lame and have black instead of invisible background.
Anyway let it be able to install Boris FX plugins, Genarts, Red Giant Suites, Tiffen, Sorenson, New Blue Video Essentials 6 and Tittler Pro, so iZotope Vocal Eraser would be a great present.

Well, Judging by the website info Pinnacle studio 17 has let us down as far as being a "pro-sumer" based program.
Only 64 bit "Optimised" - really? Get with it you guys
A few more bells and whistles. ( to distract us)
10 x times speed? I doubt it!
Most of the other features were already present and like usual, with every new release they abandon one plug in provider for another..

They say this program has been developed for the German market.
All I can say is that the German market does not aspire to grow and develop their editing skills.

Pinnacle had an opportunity to grab a huge market share with disgruntled "Adobe Cloud ": customers and failed greatly.
Did they give us what we have been asking for like Multi-cam editing, motion tracking and automatic audio syncing?
No! They gave us pretty coloured tags so we could find our media a little easier.

I will reserve my judgment on its performance and reliability after I have download and tried it, but for now, I am unimpressed!

You were right! It's here now! As Videoman said, nothing impressive enough to make someone who already has PS16U want to upgrade.
I agree, Corel has an excellent chance to move up the NLE scale and fill a slot that has no competition, although I think PD is trying to do that with their Suite. But adding more apps isn't the answer. Codecs, multicam (more than 2 or 4 cameras, old Avid Liquid handled 16), timewarp, 64bit to use all that RAM you have, secondary color correction and more would make a killer NLE app. I guess Corel isn't interested in it or does not think the investment would be worth it. They'll stick with the "bread and butter" that they know, consumer NLE and continue to get the "new" editors out there.

Well, finally (if everything what you Guys said here had been true) I was right. Corel do not want to make Pinnacle branded softrware better than their flag-ship and this, I predict, will drive new version of Videostudio X7 much better leaving PS17 behind for amateur users as the VSX7 will be driven for semi-pro users. Hope it will combine best solutions from both.

@Honorius, not too sure on this. VSP is geared more for the consumer user. PS is more for the enthusiasts. So far Corel has said just this and they are, at the moment keeping both. If anything, VSP with it's way of editing, it is more "consumer". I have VSP X5U and PS16. Which one do I use? PS16U because it is far better for editing (offering more tools) in what I do. Once Corel's coders get the hang of programming PS, things should pick up. They know what to do with VSP to get it to work (and it does work well), but enthusiast/prosumer features? Not there. With 3 versions of PS, the Plus version can replace VSP. But you never know!

Honorius, your previous thoughts might be right. But remember, everyone who owns VSP and goes to their forum already know Corel owns Pinnacle. With a price to "cross over" like what happened to those of us that owned Pinnacle's DV500 with Adobe Premiere to cross over to Pinnacle Edition (later Avid Liquid) it could happen. Many of us jumped at the price and went to Edition/Liquid.
Just a thought.....
