Pinnacle Studio beta test Pinnacle Studio 18 - public beta testing

EDIT 21 Sept. 2014 22h30 GMT: no new request are accepted, sorry... Too much email received so far.

If you follow us on a regular basis, you are aware that we have established a very good relationship with Pinnacle for some time - read Pinnacle Studio: good news ? - And you also know that we regularly send your comments to Pinnacle team. Recently, a user who said in comment : "{...} I would not touch Pinnacle Studio until they catch up with the 21st Centaury {...}". Feedback was sent to Pinnacle, and we were told that "the message is received, it will be addressed with high priority".

Therefore, Corel asked us to "recruit" a dozen candidates to participate in the public beta-test of the next Pinnacle Studio 18 version! The baby is about to be born, and he needs your help so that we can give birth to a beautiful one. Your mission, should you accept it, is simple:

  • Install the software;
  • Use it as much as you can (no schedule or specific tests, you are free to perform tests you want, without any time commitment);
  • And ... to escalate issues to developers, with whom you will be in touch to correct all problem before the final version.

Which condition should I fulfill ?

  • Having already used Pinnacle Studio 16 or 17;
  • Speak English to be able to discuss with developpers;
  • Be motivated and positive (criticism is accepted, as long as it is constructive);
  • Be 18 years old at least
  • Ready to install on your computer a beta version of the software (can present problems, your mission is to find those problems...)

I am interested, how do I register ?

It's very simple, you contact us via our contact page and give us your motivations (and the forum that you are usually checking, as well as your nickname you use in this forum, and finally your machine specifications) for becoming a public beta tester. On our side, we will consider all applications and we will inform you whether your application was successful or not, within ~2 weeks.

Do I win anything by doing this ?

You'll get a Pinnacle Studio version 18 once released, to thank you for your effort, and also the joy of having contributed to the improvement of the software, and understanding all concept of beta testing, as well as problem escalation. This is URGENT, the faster you'll join us, the sooner you will receive the software for testing and especially, the faster the new version will come out thanks to you...
If you do not participate, no worry, but do not complain after people who test the software before release...

Your turn, we are waiting for you...

Pick Me!! ME!!

Omg I can barely get my head around 17!!!! I have used Studio since version 7, then 8,9,10, 11, 12, 14, 15. I have bought 16 and 17. Didn’t even open 16 and it did my head in.

When I open 17 now my brain explodes, it’s TOO MUCH of a steep learning curve.

I beg you please go back to the more simplified layout?

I would like to test Studio 18 Beta , as I am unhappy with 17, but I am out of my house in october!
I hope that Studio 18 will be better that 17 and I will wait some months before purchassing if everyone is happy with the new version

I have used and taught Pinnacle 7 up to 17 Ultimate, my current version. I will be interested in putting the Pinnacle 18 beta through it's paces and
reporting any problems. Brian

This is not for "anyone" - and I would like to try it out. I have a totally unbiased position as I have not tried any version, yet you say or rather ask, "anyone"?
I think I would be a good fit as am unbiased and up for a good challenge.
Thanks for considering me in this testing.

@Pattycam, the reason the interface is different is because the program is different and not built on S15 and before. You should have taken the time to learn PS16. Once you know that one, PS17 and 18 should be easy. There are several places for online tutorials for the program to make the learning curve easier.
Suggestion, go and join the Pinnacle user forum where there is a ton of help for you : see here

I have been a Pinnacle user since ver. 8 I almost didn't successfully move to 16. I wasn't expecting the interface to be so complex. I'm glad I stuck with it. I now use 17 Ultimate on an I7 platform. I mostly work with video but also do a lot with photos and SmartSound (great people to work with).I have quite a few projects to work on for family and friends. I look forward having new challenges to keep me busy this Autumn and winter in the Northwoods of Wisconsin.

I think I might be a good candidate, but please don't select me.

Just a brief question before I submit my name. Is the new (18?) version going to interface with the plug ins and 3rd party programs (such as Heroglyph and all the Adorage iterations?) I still have some Bravo Studio effects that I use. Seems that every time that Pinnacle comes out with a new version, a lot of my investments (in add ons) lose value. Just curious.

John, as you gradually upgrade your computer, operating system and Studio, it seems logical that you would also need to upgrade the associated plug-ins and other programs from time to time. Why spend money on one but not the other.
The other alternative is not to upgrade anything, in which case you will not need to beta test S18
Thursday, September 18, 2014 4:05 PM
Yes John, what you said is true, BUT many of us have invested large amounts of $$$ in plug ins that were written for earlier versions on studio and they don't work. It's fine if you can get replacement, but a lot are not supported EG New Blue. So frustrating. At least Smart Sound came back. I guess that's why some of the software peps are making their programs stand alone now. EG Pro Dad

@Videoman. I initially started with the DV500. The effects that are now included cost additional money back then. Now, they are with the Plus and Ultimate versions of Pinnacle. I paid for Red Giant extra presets with PS16. Guess what.. they are included with PS17U. I also paid for the Smartsound plugin. Guess what, it's included with PS17. So, I too spent a lot of money on plugins that are now free. The difference is, these are still supported in Studio. The Bravo effects haven't seen supported or updated in years. The issue is with the creators of the software, not Pinnacle. We want "newer, better, faster" but still want to stay tied up at the dock. It isn't going to happen. You always have the option of still using the programs that it works with. Me? Moving forward......

@ Anthony. I hear what you are saying. I started with Studio MP10. It hooked up to the serial port of the computer and I made high tech mp1 video and saved them to CD. We have come a long way and we will keep going forward, all be it with a few glitches thrown in here and there.
I used New Blue in S15 and some work in S17 and some don't.
The problem I have is N.B. does not support Pinnacle as a plug in anymore.
My few favorite NB plugins of course do not work. So I still have S15 on my machine to use them. No different than using a stand alone program really.
I jumped from 15 straight into 17 and despite (in my opinion) 17 being released too soon (not ready - in my opinion) and having glitches, I absolutely love it. It has opened up so much more creativity for me.
I make short Multi layered multiple effect clips and save as MP4 and don't seem to have the probs that others do. Occasionally ":NG studio has stopped working " , but that's it (lucky me)
I love it and I'm here for the long haul to whatever the future programs bring.

Wow, I haven't seen this kind of a response in a long time.To me, upgrading does not necessarily mean getting rid of every thing you have for the new. When you remodel a kitchen, you don't ( as a rule anyway) throw out your old pots and pans. Just for everyone's info, I do have 17 Ultimate ( I started with Studio 8) and with the help of many people on various forums I have been able to get several of my old plug ins working. I embrace the new, but still like some of the old. It would just be great if some of the 'old' effects could work. That's all I meant...sorry for starting such a firestorm.

I'll be a S18 beta tester. Some faily video projects coming up.

Looking forward to be a tester. I have been a Pinnacle user since 10, prefer the 17 Ultimate looking forward to 18!'

No firestorm John. We're all "just saying".
As Anthony said, the plug in problems are generally from the creators of the plugin software. I had a particular Bravo I used quite a lot in Studio 9. I ended up doing a work around, then New Blue had plug in that did the same and I used it in S12. I can't get it to work in 15 or 17, so I am back to my work around. Takes a little longer, but I look at it as being adaptive, creative and getting to know the program in depth.

@John, no firestorm started. I do have several NewBlueFX installed in PS17. Video Essentials 1&2 along with LightBlends. There are updates on their website to the new version.

I wish Avid Liquid would have been kept and updated.....
Friday, September 19, 2014 4:16 AM
I so wish Avid kept Liquid too. Just started getting into it and POW - it's gone. Still got the training video somewhere in my archives. It was a bit of a mind bender from Studio, but wow, what it could do.

Sign me up as a beta tester

@Videoman, you should have seen Pinnacle Edition 5.5, the precursor to Pinnacle Liquid. Talk about a funky interface!

iqThe above article states 'within 2 weeks', presumably from the date of the article which was the 17th.
I assume it would be by e-mail but then it is nothing to do with me.

@TonyP who said "pick me" > register through our contact page, please, and do not forget everything we asked for (configuration, forum nickname). If you already done so, no need to register a second time.

@PattyCam: we are not Pinnacle, so we don't decide to do something simpler... Ask Pinnacle. But I would propose that you try Corel Video Studio which is, to my understanding, easier to use, while with Pinnacle Studio, you do much more.

@Brian, @emzirek, @Bruce Little, @BillC, @Radiozener, : same than for TonyP, we will only take into account people who apply through our contact page as mentionned in the article. If you already applied, no need to re-submit twice please...

@Kimse: you are in the english part of the website, please submit your request on french page (flag on top) - I will move your comment in the correct section rather soon.

@plemmens: ???? Can you explain ???

@John: we don't have full details, otherwise we will divulgate all information before Pinnacle Studio 18 release, that's not possible. Regarding the upgrade of a kitchen, there is a very simple example: if you switch from gaz to induction cooking, you have to change all your pot for cooking !!

@videoman3857: proDAD has standalone but also plugin version, all of them are currently plugins working within Pinnacle Studio.

@Bruce Little: beta tester will be contacted by email, rather soon... Stay tuned.

@All: we received so many applications, that we will probably close the registration quite soon. We now have to sort it out and submit to Pinnacle. Thanks for your comprehension, looking forward to work with you all.

How long will this beta testing last? I want to test m2ts smart rendering in Ps18. Ps17 is great but without smart rendering the output quality is good but you lose a lot comparing with original footage.
Friday, October 3, 2014 8:00 PM
@Scorcer, first, smart rendering has nothing to do what quality of the output. Second, there is a NDA so no one can tell you anything about the beta testing. You have to wait like everyone else who is not in the program. Third, you have to give your source and export settings. I don't find what you are talking about in what I do and I work with Canon AVCHD and Canon DSLR HD footage. So, without you providing information, your settings could be wrong.
Wednesday, October 15, 2014 5:38 PM
Canon camcorders that shoot video and record to AVCHD produse m2ts files that have a 24 mb bitrate. Even if I export to Bluray 24 mb bitrate in Ps17 i still do not have the same quality as in the original m2ts files.
Here comes smart rendering. Ex: m2ts file + transition + m2ts file+transition+m2ts+m2ts+m2ts = 1 final m2ts file (only de parts that needs rendering are rendered, in this case the transitions) The problem is that AVCHD was not design with smart rendering in mind and it is hard to implement. One software that support m2ts smart rendering is Corel Video Studio X7. Practice test: Take one video file in m2ts and load it into Photoshop. Now take the same file and converted it to bluray, m2ts, mp4, and the take the converted m2ts file and put it into Photoshop and click on each and you will see a visible diference
Wednesday, October 15, 2014 5:45 PM
When Ps17 launch it stated in one of the featured:
See results sooner with up to 10x faster video rendering.
This was smart rendering but is buggy. Ex: Take one single m2ts file and put in in Ps17 timeline, now hit export and you will see a format called smart. If you put 2 m2ts files on the timeline and put a transitions beteen them and you hit export the smart option disappears and you are left with (Mp4, m2ts, mov, etc) but you are now saving in a loseless format.
