Studio 14, a new version. What's inside?

For those who subscribe to our free newsletter, you found out exclusively on 09/09/09 in our article "Pinnacle Studio 14-15 HD, Ultimate and Ultimate Collection". Some questions have already arrived through the comment section. Of course, with every new version (and not only with Pinnacle products), we have people who are happy, those who are less satisfied, and many who are in between. That's what gives vitality to our website; we are open to all comments, as long as they stay objective.

Before going further, let's have a look AVID press release

It's a pleasure for me to continue this second article, dedicated to Pinnacle Studio14, to better understand what it is composed of, and to try to answer those questions already asked. Of course, we will probably need more than one article to fully cover the product and to find an answer to every question. But let's go step by step! Beforehand, I would like to tell you about my computer configuration, so you can have a point of reference:

  • Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 2.4 GHz
  • Motherboard GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS4 (P965 Socket 775) / sound onboard
  • Graphic card GIGABYTE GV-RX16T256V-RH (ATI Radeon X1600XT 256DDR DVI VIVO)
  • DDR800 2GB (PC2-6400) CORSAIR TwinX
  • Hard disk (system) SATAII 250 GB WESTERN DIGITAL Caviar SE (16 MB) 7200 rpm
  • Video hard disk SATAII 500 GB SEAGATE NL35 (16 MB)
  • DVD Burner RW DL Plextor PX-750A (Firmware 1.03)
  • Windows XP Pro SP3
  • PANASONIC camcorder NV-GS400 (SD)
Installation - Upgrade from Studio 12 to Studio 14

Pinnacle Studio 14 - Installer

Don't forget to render any current projects (as AVI, MPEG, ...) so you can work with it under Pinnacle Studio 14 (I do not recommend working on an S12 project using S14, even if it works). I don't advise you to uninstall any of the previous versions, I started the switchover with Pinnacle Studio 9 and Pinnacle Studio 12...

So, I installed the DVD Studio 14: it was fast, very few warnings ... In short, I was a happy user. You won't be asked to uninstall any previous version.

Regarding the speed of installation, it took less than 20 minutes to complete:

  • 3 minutes for upgrading "Windows Installer" (V4.5). Note, you will need to re-boot your computer.
    Windows Installer 4.5

  • 16 minutes for upgradig Studio 12 to Studio 14 Ultimate Collection. The system re-installed my video driver and the installer asked  me to localize the "MarvinBus.sys" file (nothing very serious, I just gave it the current location, Windows\System32, but don't worry, we will post a tutorial later on for upgrading).

  • 4 minutes for Red Giant plugins

The most time consuming step is the one which uninstalls and removes all "installer file". Just be patient....
On my side, I had just a small problem when registering, probably due to the fact that I quit in advance and the server wasn't prepared to see a Studio 14 user ?

Let's look at the new interface

Pinnacle Studio 14 Screen Capture - Interface

We will do a quick overview of the general design, without going into details.

I like:

  • new design, straight forward style, grey like the pro interface (I agree, this is a very personal thing, I am sure that some of you will hate the new design but you can't please everyone...)
  • Import (capture) interface has been fully reviewed, including the famous "Stop Motion" we discussed in our previous article, the ability to grab any picture from the webcam or even to acquire a small scene with it (a minor feature or really useful ?), importing DVD, pictures, and much more...
  • page concept in various windows have been replaced by a scroll bar. This is a big thumbs up in my opinion !
  • the new motion titler
  • the two volume units (stereo view) which help you to visualize the sound level.
  • Welcome screen which gives you access to a small tour that everybody should follow ! Very well done. You also have the ability to load the test project to have an overview of Studio 14 capabilities. Finally, the free video training link is the same one that the one we propose in our Pinnacle Studio webpage, right column called "Quick Links - Pinnacle Resources"
  • Favorite folders (to be talked about later on)

We do not like:

  • the small padlock for locking corresponding track, which is less user-friendly than before in my opinion,
  • Motion titler interface, seems quite difficult to use, but we will come back to this topic later on.
  • start-up is slower than Pinnacle Studio 12 (4-5 additional seconds, ~17 seconds for Studio 12 and 21 seconds for Studio 14)
  • Also a big disappointment for those of you who are wanting more video tracks... Pinnacle Montage can be a temporary alternative ?
SmartSounds

And what about SmartSound ? Today, I was unable to install it or to transfer it into Pinnacle Studio 14. I tried several times ! After being contacted on the subject, Pinnacle answered the following:

  • The MusicGenerator tool has been consolidated into a solid structure with a robust interface named SoundStage
  • All manufacturers who wish to work with Pinnacle to create plugins can do so
  • Pinnacle will deliver the associated development tool kit and will provide adequate support
  • Concerning SmartSound: Pinnacle has been in touch with SmartSound who confirmed that their plugins will not be adjusted to Studio 14
And what about plugins ? And Studio 9/10/11/12 content ?

That's the BIG question, as usual: "{...} will my previous content purchased with Studio 9, 10, 11 and Studio 12 be usable with Studio 14 ?... and the answer?...". Yes, the good old "Transfer wizard" is still there...

Pinnacle Studio - Content Transfer Wizard

The upgrade from Studio 12 to Studio 14 is taking into account part of Studio 12 plugins, all functionalities as well as HFX effects. Others plugins will be installed separately with the Content Transfer Wizard or manually, except for SmartSounds...

Summary: after installing Studio 14, here is what is automatically transferred:

What was missing ? The following plugins, that I managed to transfer using this method:

  • RTFx Volume 2: by using Content Transfer Wizard (insert RTFx Volume 2 DVD and ask for a repair)
  • various video plugins purchased with Studio 10 like Bravo Studio Pack, Stage Tools, ... (see corresponding list on the right): using Content Transfer Wizard (insert Studio 10 Bonus DVD and ask for a repair)
  • various audio plugins purchased with Studio 10 (like BIAS Sound Soap): same procedure, excepted that I had some problems with BIAS registration process, the same and usual problems we already encountered (not linked to Pinnacle but to BIAS system)....
  • other plugins like ProDAD VitaScene, Heroglyph, Mercalli, Adorage: use the Content Transfer Wizard (insert Studio 10 DVD Bonus and ask for a repair) AND afterwards, apply the various patches that you find on our download page, proDAD VitaScene, Heroglyph, Mercalli and Adorage section .
  • third party video/audio plugins like JPs Effects (see the list on our link page, audio/video plugin category) which will be installed by copying the associated RTFx folder which contain all fex and xml associated file/folder. Once again, we will create a tutorial for this special case...
  • BorisFX: Boris Graffiti was re-installed with the Content transfer Wizard by choosing S11 content (I know that Boris is part of S12, but it works like this !), and re-installing the S12 DVD Bonus and asking for a customised repair, modifying the path (replace S12 by S14 and that do the trick !). We will also make a tutorial on this specific migration...
Plugins Vidéo Pinnacle Studio 14

So now, you should obtain the whole Studio 12 content, without losing anything except SmartSound.
For your information, I recorded the full install process, so I will be able to upload a tutorial pretty soon. This way, you won't have any problem to update, and you will be assisted in doing so, as usual with our website !

On my configuration, I have the same problem as the one I reported when closing Pinnacle Studio: studio.exe process is still alive, and I need to manually kill it (using task manager). That's not a big problem, I think it's only in certain cases, I never read similar problems on the forums.

Otherwise, I also have Pinnacle Studio 9 and Pinnacle Studio 12 installed. They all live together !! I can also open Studio 9 while using Studio 12 or Studio 14. But I can not open Studio 12 and Studio 14 both together. Probably due to the engine which is similar. But for sure, that's not a big problem, except if you want to do side by side comparisons!

New functionnality

What's new?

Capture and media importation

Pinnacle Studio 14, screen capture for the import media window

This interface has been slightly redesigned. Studio lets you incorporate many kinds of media in your video productions. When these are stored externally from your computer – on a camcorder tape or a memory stick from your digital camera – they must be transferred to local storage before you can use them. You can also capture your webcam activity, live ! Various controls depend on the task you are performing (DVD importation, ...). In this window, you will also use the famous "Stop Motion" mode, or the snapshot feature. We will detail these new functions later on.

Project bin

Pinnacle Studio 14 - Favorites Folder

That's rather simple: whereas the Album is a central library of available resources, the Bin contains only those items that either already belong to the current project or that you have specifically earmarked for possible inclusion. Pretty cool !! We will see in the future if we use it, or if we stick with old habits.

Motion titler

"Motion" Titler for Studio 14 HD

In my opinion, this is the most interesting part of this new version.  Studio’s Motion Titler is a powerful tool for creating and editing animated titles and graphics without using plugins or HFX effects. As such, you will be able to animate text without using anything else than this new titler. But I have to admit that it is not so easy to use, not so intuitive... You will find the usual titling categories (ressources, objects, looks and motion or "effect"), as well as a timeline on which you will add layer and effect, customizing the effect on the timeline. Motions contains the animation routines that give the motion titler its power. They are divided into three classes based on the portion of the layer's lifespan they affect: EnterEmphasis and Exit. In each three classes, several standard types based on their mode of action: letter-based, word, line or page-based.
On my side, I had some difficulities editing the existing motion, to better understand how they are constructed and to better understand the working condition. I hope that we will later on have additional information.

Red Giant Plugins

Red Giant plugin Knoll Light Factory

Concerning Red Giant plugins, you apply it as any other plugin; access to the settings is standard, you set it with the usual window. No specific interface. Some presets already exist, and then you can do whatever you want, by modifying certain parameters. Try it, and give us your best settings !

Various other information

After a few quick tests based on some comments received on our website, I found that:

  • it's still difficult to import BluffTitler file in PAL format - no problem for NTSC (take note that we are still offering a 10% discount on BluffTitler, waiting to obtain more and to find a solution for PAL importation)
  • AVCHD 5.1 importation does not take into account the surround sound. It is transformed into stereo sound (you can later on switch to surround, but you loose the surround information)
  • .MOV files are imported without any trouble
  • iPod exportation can be done easily, without having to do conversions (you will probably enjoy this new feature with the latest iPod nano which is accepting movies !!)

We did not talk about SmartMovie or Pinnacle Montage, but they are of course still there... No Studio 12 functions have been lost during the upgrade...  Phewww....

BONUS

And for those who read this article completely, you will probably be more than happy to know that you can already order the Pinnacle Studio 14 upgrade by itself, with a $20 discount, following this link: Pre-order Pinnacle Studio 14 upgrade (I say again, it concerns only upgrade version).

UPGRADE REQUIREMENTS

I currently have a dual boot configuration with XP running Pinnacle 10.6 and Windows 7RC (which at this moment has a trial version of Pinnacle 12). I will be changing over to windows 7 within the next 6 months, possibly with a new computer.
What I want to know is, can I take the upgrade path (in W7) even though Pinnacle 10.6 will not run in W7. In other words is proof of having the P10.6 installation disc enough.

Yes. During S14 installation, you will be asked to insert S10 disc. Insert it while keeping Shift pressed on your keyboard. After S10 disc recognition, S14 installation will continue.

I have Pinnacle Studio Plus 10.8. I recently purchased Studio Ultimate 12, but I have not installed it. One of the main reasons I purchased the upgrade was due to Boris Graffiti. I contacted Avid thru Live Chat as well as through their customer support phone number, and neither source could tell me whether or not Boris Graffiti is included in v. 14.

Boris is not at all included in Studio 14, but as DV tested succesfully, you can transfer it from S12 to S14

SoundStage: what will it do that Scorefitter cannot? Does it allow for creation of dynamic background loops, themes, or instrumentations beyond items provided in the existing Scorefitter selections? Does it resemble a full-feature MIDI composer? Might it support import of any MIDI file? With S12, it is not possible to drag a MIDI file to a sound track, without first converting it to WAV, or to nestle a MIDI file in the Scorefitter folder and have it recognized.

Please test the export time for, say, a 10 minute AVCHD-DVD image, relative to S12. Any differences in the CPU utilization? If you insert 10 melt transitions between 11 AVCHD clips, does the background rendering occur any faster?

The Fluid Stabilizer: how does performance compare, when stabilizing shaky HD video, to the ProDad Mercallli Expert one?

The new album uses a single page navigated by a bar, rather than pages, but is the time required to load clips and create thumbnails about the same?

I guess you're talking about something already existing in olders Studio versions.

Could you be a little more explicit ?

Are you 100% sure that the 5.1 import from AVCHD files doesn't work correctly (still changed to stereo) upon import? How did you do the test? To me that was the biggest problem with Studio 12.

I just answer to the latest question, I will do the same for other questions later on...
Markk655, if you have an AVCHD 5.1 clip, please be so kind to send it to me. I just tried with one I had, and supposed to be 5.1. But I might have done it false or the clip was not correct. Generally, I only write something when I am 100% sure about it, but I can also admit that I am not a man without error... ;-)

@ Carbondale,

Currently Scorefitter is the only one implemented. I do not know anything else concerning SoundStage (excepted what I mentionned in the article). I do not have any experience with AVCHD and AVCHD clip, sorry...
The stabiliser: I will do some tests, believe me I was suprised by the first results (very good !). For the navigation using bar, stay tuned I will later on published a small video showing what I do (you will be able to see by yourself).

Just wanted to thank you for the review. There are several questions that you answered for me in seeing if this upgrade is worth the money . If we were treated as well by Pinnacle as we are by this website we would be doing great. Thanks again for the review and looking forward to your updates.

Markk655, I sent the Sony AVCHD file to DV to test the 5.1 importation...

It's a real 5.1, usualy in the time line you can see all the audio tracks (when the software handle the 5.1 as input), but Studio seem to show only the standard Stereo track.

So bad, I'm waiting too for this option with the new Studio ;(

First, thank you for answering my previous question, second, you are doing a grand job it is much appreciated.

The preorder offer of $80 ($100 full price) for the Ultimate collection upgrade is apparently from the US site. The equivilant UK price would therefore be £70-£14=£56. Can you confirm this.
If the offer only applies to the US site, is there any difference between the US and UK versions.

On the US site you could buy Studio 14, with delivery to European Countries or Download (they calculate the VAT if you have it).

You will be charged in US$...

Thank you for the information where it seems this particular offer is not applicable to the UK site. I had not thought about a direct price comparison (or VAT) at the time.
However, as a rough guide using 17.5% VAT and an exchange rate 1.67, the US and UK prices nearly correspond with the offer price again at about £56.
I know that Pinnacle are circulating an offer to existing customers but at this time do not Know what that is.

@ jameshorsley1976: THANKS !!

@ Markk655 / malobar: I used AVCHD 5.1 file sent from malobar. I switch the "surround" sound on the timeline, and when drag-and-drop the clip on it, I only see a "stereo" sound (everything at the front speaker, nothing else). So I assume it lost the 5.1 information, otherwise I would see the exact 5.1 localisation.

@ David Hunt: in the french forum, we have seen the GB link for the S14 order. Saby, Le Papy, do you still have the link to GB order please ??

@ Steve M: Digital Juice alpha channel... I would be more than happy to try it, I contact Digital Juice 2 times, without success, so I give up.

@ Gert: I upgraded from S12 to S14, so I can not say if HFX is loaded again. It's generally the case, as it was the case with previous version (check our HFX FAQ webpage). In general, it brings HFX and several basic pack. If you want to edit the HFX, you need to buy the HFX Creator key. You can also buy various HFX packages, so there is no reason why HFX won't be there.

In Studio HD 14, how many of the 80+ montage templates are new, that is not released before. I ask because I have 100 now and do not wish to pay for what is already available and I already have. If possible can you list the names of the templates.

Have asked SmartSound re Pinnacle Studio 14 and this was their reply !!

Hello Gert, That is correct, Pinnacle did not include the SmartSound Quicktracks plugin in Studio 11 or 12, but it would still work if you installed the plugin on your own. This is not the case in the upcoming Studio 14, which will specifically disable Quicktracks. Unfortunately there will be no way to access SmartSound music from within Studio 14. However, you can use our standalone software, Sonicfire Pro 5. Sonicfire Pro 5 can use all of your SmartSound music and will generate an audio file at the length you need. You can then take that audio file and import it into Studio to use. The full Scoring Edition of Sonicfire Pro also gives you much more flexibility when it comes to customizing your tracks. If you like, you can download a free demo of Sonicfire Pro from the link below to see what it can do. Although you may lose some workflow efficiency by having to change between programs, you gain much more control over the music. If you want to use SmartSound music in Pinnacle Studio 14, this will really be the best option. You can download the demo of Sonicfire Pro 5 here:http://www.smartsound.com/sonicfire/demos/go5.html You can view some online tutorials on using Sonicfire Pro here:http://www.smartsound.com/sonicfire/tutorials/index.html Hope this helps, if you have any other questions, please let me know. Does anyone know if S14 will now handle Cineform-processed files? I used Cineform's NeoScene to remove Telecine as well as extract true 24p streams. Was about to embark on using/learning Vegas since S11/12 didn't support the .avi codec that Cineform outputs. If S14 now does, I'll be one happy camper! Thanks.

SHAME ON PINNACLE -- The mass e-mail Pinnacle sent says "Version 14 is NOW Available" and in small print that the boxed version will be available Sept. 28th. - I ordered the download version plus a DVD to be mailed Sept. 28th. When I could not find the link to download, I called Customer Service and Technical Support who both said V. 14 would not be available to download until Sept. 28th. Pinnacle needs to get the correct information on their web site. Not fair to customers. If they can't provide the product don't send e-mail's saying NOW AVAILABLE.

SmartSound " how to " clarification !!

Hello Gert, It should be seamless. Both Sonicfire Pro and the Quicktracks plugin use the same folder to store sound files, so you should only have to install Sonicfire Pro and it should detect all of your previous music. If you store your music in a separate folder other than the default SmartSound location, you will need to go into the options menu and click the Folders tab, then click Add and browse to the folder where your sound files are stored. Once this is set, Sonicfire Pro should detect all of your SmartSound music. If you have any other questions, please let me know. Regards,Frank -----------------------------Original message follows: Ok thanks for your reply and efficiency . Is there a way ( looking for step by step instruction ) on how to extract what is already sitting in Pinnacle Studio into your STAND ALONE ? Is there any information about GPU rendering of HD using cuda or stream? The minimum specifications say you need an I7 2.66 for rendering of AVCHD 1920. No mention of a cuda or stream graphics card. In a competitors product the GPU rendering made it at least 4 times faster than Studio 12.

Your S14 overview is greatly appreciated and timely. I also received the upgrade email and had curious questions as the above readers. I agree, I wish Pinnacle would have been as kind to disclose more information about what's included in the new upgrade like number of video tracks, etc. I'm shocked they didn't add more features, which everyone has been asking for in there forums. And if they applications hasn't changed that much, my guess is their customer service hasn't gotten much better either.

Question: Please clarify, are there still the same number of video tracks, one plus PIP?

Question: Did they even resolve the menu resolution issue that has been a hugh problem since S11 and they would never admit to? My guess is no.

Question: Is project rendering any quicker?

Question: How does it work with Adobe CS4? Can you edit movie frames easily as some of the other programs allow you to like Sony Vegas?

Question: Are they any reasons to really upgrade from S12 Ultimate that will not bring on more headaches?

As much as I love the product and have been using it since V9, this looks like this may be the end of the road for me. Or I will certainly not be one of the initial upgraders just to save $20 and loose hundreds of hours of my time which is worth more than $20 an hour. I also use Bluff Titler and effects from Digital Juice.

For the same V14 upgrade price I can purchase the basic version of Sony Vegas which has looked to be the easiest interface to convert over to with a lesser learning curve and more video tracks and the ability to work with CS4. I've tried the 30 day trial of Vegas and Avid. Avid was more difficult for me to run with.

There have been various issues with Pinnacle since V9 when I first installed. This almost sounds like it more of a big patch fix with some color changes and a couple of more whistles than a full blow overhaul. I still don't appreciate them requiring me to find my old install DVDs back to S9 for upgrades/transfers. There best feature has been the ease of use of the program and HFX.

Question: Does anyone know how to get the HFX libraries moved over to other applications or if they work without having to repurchase?

Thanks, and thanks for sharing.

You write that ".MOV files are imported without any trouble"

Perhaps some of them. But all? Studio 12 could import, but not support full editing of, h.264 MOV 1280x720 60p video files shot with the new Kodak, Flip, or JVC mini camcorders. The h.264 MOV format is also found on the high-end Canon DSLRs that shoot video. The files are jerky in preview and projects incur rendering problems if there are transitions or overlays beyond the 3-minute point of a timeline. Does Studio 14 remedy this?

@ Barry,
I am currently making a check to see if we lost something, and what's new... Stay tuned.

@ Gert,
No comparison, one is for 3D Title and you can do whatever you like, the other one is more Title Deko like, with some enhancements for movements, effects, with pre-applied settings.
Red Giant: I do not think that they are compatible with S12, but I do not have any information on the topic (in my opinion, it's clear that it is not retro-compatible, otherwise people won't buy S14...)

@ Terry,
I have no idea, I will asked Pinnacle and see if I can have an answer.

@ CD,
I have no idea, I will let you know if I have any answer for this.

@ Family Videographer,
Usually, Pinnacle does not use hardware acceleration or specific graphic card, should be the case for S14.

@ A Freeman,
- Yes, two video tracks + a third one (see Forgotten track...).
- I am not aware of any menu resolution issue. Can you clarify so I can try to have a look ?
- Project rendering should normally be faster for AVCHD. My first test does not give any big difference for MPEG2, but give a small enhancement for AVCHD MPEG2 .mts file.
- Pinnacle does not work with Adobe CS4, at least I have never heard about this.
- This is up to you, that's why I done this review, you can take your decision knowing exactlly what you have in this specific version... I can not choose for you Freeman, you are a ... free man, Huh ?
- For all Adobe CS4 and Vegas question, I would strongly encourage you to check other people website who are using this software. I am using Pinnacle Studio only. For HFX and Adobe Premiere, please check our tutorial on the subject, but we are off-topic !

@ Carbondale,
I have no idea, can you please use the CONTACT page to send me a link to your file, so I can test ?

Thanks for the reply. It's tough not to like and enjoy the simplicity of Studio, however, their customer service and the companies willingness to bring Studio up to a compariable standard level of their competitors basic software package is less than desireable. One more version upgrade with no great improvements, they may loose their market share. Or at least their loyal customers how have been around from S9 - S12.

Again, great tip on the 3rd video track, it would have been better if S14 did not make this a workaround to achieve the same results or if Pinnacle simply would have included a 3 or 4 video track as some of their competitively priced competitors. May be time to reevalute their programmers or start listening to their customer base for more feedback.

Regarding the menu clarity. This has been an issue since S10 thru S12 that has not been addressed or any patches issued to correct. If you review the comments in the below forum link on the pinnacle website, it was difficult to get them to acknowledge there was an issue. Still doing nothing or not even offering a "workaround" to correct. The client comments you're left to deal with are; Great video, but way is the picture on the menu so blurry? I don't know. Or better yet, I didn't notice and I have an entire forum thread to prove it.

http://forums.pinnaclesys.com/forums/thread/210416.aspx

S9 - Crisp, clear menus
S10 - Fuzzy menus
S11 - Fuzzy menus
S12 - Fuzzy menus (maybe some improvement for HD work, I'm not sure)

Another great enhancement would be the abilty to hoover over your pictures in the "add picture" mode and have it magnify so you can see clearer details and decide if you wish to add to your project without having to click on it and view in the preview window on the right. Or allow you to detach the preview window and size as desirable. My work around, I view photos in Windows Explorer and just drag to the time line from Windows Explorer. Music too.

But I do love the simplicity of the program or I just a creature of habit.

Hello Freeman,

Your menu problem is not related to Pinnacle, but to the way you are using menus. It's not the correct way of doing it. Try the following: insert a menu, and select a thumbnail menu, where you select a chapter and then you select your desired pictures to be used in the thumbnail. That gives success. But I would not start a discussion regarding this topic here, we can continue into your Pinnacle thread. Thanks for your comprehension, I do not want to replace forum with these comments sections.

Hi;
Thank u very much for this perfect help, great job. I have a couple of questions about this. When installing Boris as u mentioned above, I don´t have the chance to change the path in any moment, it just says modify or delete and then it goes installing till it finishes. I don´t know how to get it installed.
My other questions is that in this version I don´t see the RTFX 2 anywhere and in version 12 I have it installed and I don´t have any specific disc for RTFX 2 as u mentioned. I don´t have the JPs effects neither, how could I get them?? I have all previous verisions.

Hope u can help me. Excellent job.

How is PS 14 with Slow Motion (50%)? Does it still reduce the quality of the video slightly?
Déclic Vidéo FX
Thursday, September 24, 2009 2:16 PM
@ Prem,
There was some problems for importing BluffTitler AVI (transparent) file into Studio 12 for PAL. But if you export in NTSC, there is no problem. And since you can mix NTSC and PAL within Studio, there is no problem.
But unfortunetaly, that's true that Studio 14 has the exact and same problem....

@ Gert,
I am using a SAMSUNG SyncMaster T240 (24") as well as a SAMSUNG SyncMaster 710TM. I strongly recommend SAMSUNG, I had a problem with one monitor after 6 months purchase, it has been completely replaced (in 24 hours in France). So for me, that's the best choice.

@ Tom,
Studio 14 is fully working with Windows 64 bits.

@ Bill,
Please choose "REPAIR" option, and you will be asked for the installation path. We will launch the appropriate tutorials in few days, please be patient. We are VERY busy currently...
For RTFx Volume 2, I have a special DVD. I don't know how you obtained it otherwise...
For JPs effects, you need to copy and paste the .fex and .xml files from S12 folder (RTFx) to S14 folder and it works. Hope to have clarified the question.

@ Freeman,
Quality in preview mode is very subjective... But to my opinion, to 50% there is no degradation. At 25%, it is still reducing the quality.

What I want to do is film a subject on a green screen. Then remove the green screen from the subject and create a transparent alpha channel. I then want to export this file to a flash format with the transparent alpha channel intact so I can insert it over a webpage and have my subject appear as if they are floating on the webpage during playback. Right now, I have to capture in studio then export to Adobe AE where I can use Keylite to chroma key. (very good keyer) Then I use AE (after effect) to export the clip as a QT animation since this allows for 32 bit color with alpha channel. I then bring this into Flash MX pro where I can render this QT animation file as a flash with alpha video clip. Now I can insert this on the webpage anywhere I want. The clip plays as if it is floating over the webpage content. I would love to do this directly from Studio 14, instead of capture, then export to AE then Export to Flash MX. ALSO**** Will studio 14 import a quick time clip w/ alpha for use as a transition or drop on an existing HD clip on the timeline as an animation or lower third effect. Thus my original Digital Juice plug in question. Please see my homepage for the transparent flash playback clip. www.streamingsteves.com

HAVE A NICE DAY FROM ATHENS, GREECE. YOUR SUGGESTION ABOUT INSTALLING THE BORRIS GRAFFITI FRO THE PINNACLE STUDIO 12.1 TO STUDIO 14 HD ULTIMATE COLLECTION I WOULD LIKE TO ADD A SUGGESTION REGARGING THE SAME ISSUE.

IF YOU HAVE THE PINNACLE STUDIO 12.1 DOWLOADED, JUST SET UP (ISTALL) THE BORRIS GRAFFITI FILE AND BROWSE (I REPEAT BROWSE) THE FOLDER "BORIS GRAFFITI/PROGRAM FILES/STUDIO 14 (INSTEAD OF PINNACLE STUDIO 12.1 ETC.). I FOLLOWED THAT WAY AND I INSTALLED (SET UP) THE BORRIS GRAFFITI (IT IS A NICE STUDIO TYPING SOFTWARE) FROM THE PS12.1 TO STUDIO 14 ULTIMATE COLLECTION WITHOUT USING ANY BONUS DVD.

I AGREE WITH YOU THAT THE MOTION TITLER OF THE STUDIO 14 ULTIMATE COLLECTION IS, AT THE VERY BEGINNING QUITE HARD TO USE. THANKS A LOT

You review is excellent, though you didn't cover stability. I have always found stability of Studio an issue on any of the PC's I have used it on (now on my fourth).

This version is no better - i tried it for the first time last night and it locked up regularly, resulting in my having to kill the task. On one occasion it actually cause a BSOD on my PC! I think this is ridiculous for a 14th release of a product! The only saving grace, is it seems quite good at recovering your project after a crash - so I have not actually lost any work... :-|

You failed to mention that Pinnacle has apparent drop support for third-party video capture cards in Version 14. My capture/tuner card which worked fine in Studio 12 is not recognized in Studio 14. Pinnacle support basically was of no help as they do not provide support for third-party hardware. (In other words, they want you to buy a Pinnacle capture product.)

@ Steve,
I have no idea... But why not using BluffTitler for that specific purpose ? It can create transparent layer, and you can obtain a 10% discount by following this link: BluffTitler -10% discount (check if you can export to flash, I suddenly have a doubt).

@ Gert, yes, the manual says that it is available, but as discussed on the forum, it seems that it's an error, see the statement I done in my article, coming from Pinnacle...

@ Barry,
You can upgrade from S9 to S14 without any problem. Regarding your camescope, I have no idea, but I do not see any major problem, quite all camcorder are compatible with Studio.

@ Nick,
Thanks. But it would be hard after few days of test to speak about stability... If I would have said something, it would have been: I am rather happy, it is very stable... But as you know, stability is a big subject, and nobody share the ame opinion, it depends of your configuration, etc... I never had any problem in the past, because I only install video program on my computer, and I choose a computer which is adapted for video...

@ Charles,
I probably failed to many things, but as a reminder, I am an amateur, and not a professional... So if my review are not 100% sure, that's "normal" isn't it ? It's better to present something, than nothing anyway ! I am sure that if you take time to investigate, you will find an acceptable solution.

As I shall want - in due course - to burn to BluRay, I gather that I must buy the Ultimate version (I presently have and use Studio 9). Is that correct?

Concerning the licence issue , the rule is one licence for one PC. So with one upgrade you can only instal S14 on one PC.

DEAR ALL OF YOU, HAVE A GREAT DAY. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME WHEN I NOTICE FROM YOUR EXCELLE WEB SITE THE “BLUFFTITLER”.

I HAVE AREADY PURCHASED THE PRO RELEASE OF IT. IT HAS A GREAT VERIETY OF VIDEO TITLES. MOST OF THEM ARE REALLY IMPRESSIVE BUT IT CANNOT BE INCORPORATED TO THE WELL KNOWN VIDEO EDITING SOFTWARES (PERSONALLY I USE THE PINNACLE STUDIO 14 AND THE COREL VIDEOSTUDIO 12).
IN ORDED TO USE THE BLUFFER TITLES COMPOSED BY THE BLUFFER TITLER, YOU HAVE TO EXPORT THEM AS AVI VIDEOS. THEN THEY ARE PROCESSED AS ALL THE OTHER VIDEOS WHEN USING THEM WITH THE VIDEO EDITING SOFTWARES.

IN OTHER – SIMPELE WORDS, IF YOU WISH TO CHANGE SOMETHING IN THE BLUFFER TITLES AFTER THEIR EXPORTATION AS AVI VIDEOS, YOU CANNOT. YOU HAVE TO CREATE ANOTHER BLUFF TITLE VIA THE BLUFFE TITLES FROM THE VERY BEGINNING AND TO EXPORT IT AGAIN AND AGAIN TO AVI FILE ACCORDING TO WHAT YOU WISH TO CREATE THE DESIRES TITLE.

THANKS A LOT ALL OF YOU FOR LETTING ME KNOW NEW INTERESTED ISSUES REGARDING THE PINNACLE STUDIO 14 ULITMATE COLLECTION AND THE BLUFFER TITLER AS WELL.

I still run Pinnacle 11 and will stay with them.
All of my friends use Final Cut Pro and love it. Sure it cost more, but
you are not nickle and dime to death with the add-on's.

I have been a X-Loyal customer since Pinnacle 7 came out. You
should see my file on each upgrade. I finally had enough with Pinnacle
12 when my library of Smart Sounds would not work with 12. I just
got my money back and said to heXX with them. I don't need
the frustration.
I really hoped that Avid would go through the Pinnacle company and
clean up their act.
Do a search on Pinnacle Video Problems and see how many thousands
of people that can't their copies to work.
I can say, I am glad Pinnacle doesn't built airplanes. There wouldn't
be enough people on the ground to clean up the mess.

OH, I hate that new gray skin, it is hard to see. They need a way
of changing it to other, more viewable screens.

I have a few questions about the following from the above article

'it's still difficult to import BluffTitler file in PAL format - no problem for NTSC (take note that we are still offering a 10% discount on BluffTitler, waiting to obtain more and to find a solution for PAL importation)'

first what are the problems? I have downloaded blufftitler to try out and I didn't have any difficultly putting it on the timeline in studio 12 (PAL). I am thinking of buying Bluff Titler and also upgrading to V14 so I don't want to then find I can't use it.

Also you mention 10% discount but it is the Easy version - I would want to buy the Pro version so that I could edit all effects and start from scratch if I want to. do you offer discount on the pro version?

thank you

Hello Julie,

Sometimes, Studio 12 refuse to import files rendered with Blufftitler (in PAL, no problem with NTSC). With Studio 14, I am currently making some tests with BluffTitler V 7.6.5 ... It's a topic which is discuss on french forum, since we have some problems with importing process.

BluffTitler V 7.6.5 has also some problems to render files in high quality, even with high performance graphic card. Unfortunately, we were not able to test the latest BluffTitler Version. You might want to check BluffTitler website for additionnal information ? There was a topic with Studio problems (with V 7 of BluffTitler, I do not know how it is with the latest version).

The discount was available in the past, it's not available anymore, sorry... It was a partnership which has not been accepted anymore.

How do I get new Activation Keys if I move my software to a new computer.

If you re-install your Pinnacle application onto a new PC you will need to manually re-enter your Activation Keys in order to re-enable the premium content you have purchased. If you have not recorded your Activation Keys, you can access them under the Help menu by clicking on "View Activation Keys". Please note, your Activation Keys are stored in the Pinnacle application loaded on your old PC. If you no longer have access to your old PC, please close this window and click on "Regenerate Activation Keys" in the right hand navigation. This will take you to a site that will re-generate your keys for you. Note, you will need your Pinnacle Passport number when accessing this site. You can get your Pinnacle Passport number under the Help menu in your Pinnacle application.
