Video walls are currently very fashionable and can present slideshows in an original way. Montage themes offer some possibilities but are still a bit too fast for my taste. Some time ago, in the tutorial "Install Heroglyph 4.0 into Pinnacle Studio 16" I showed you how to make a beautiful video wall with just a few mouse clicks. But I also know that not everyone necessarily has the means to afford these specialized professional grade programs. It is with them in mind that I provide this plugin that will allow you to easily make a video wall using HFX with just a little more time and a little more work. It is a plugin that lets you create a wall of nine moving images that each will take turns moving to the forefront of your presentation.
Note : Pictures can be replaced by video clips in AVI format. But be careful not to overdo it if you don't have a powerful enough computer.

Step 1 : Using the Plugin in Studio

Because it's a plugin, you should use the HFX Filter in Studio. If you want to know the difference between a transition and a plugin, please refer to our FAQ  #8 on the Hollywood FX page .

But in any case, you should be able to get this kind of result:

Step 2 : Presentation of the Plugin

The 378-videowall plugin, which is free to download , comes with one static image and nine moving pictures. Before downloading, you can preview this effect in the corresponding page or watch the video inserted at the beginning of this tutorial.

The tutorial "Learn Hollywood FX (HFX)" contains everything you need to know to use Hollywood FX. In particular, it contains all the links that may be useful to achieve, in detail, the various operations described briefly below. For details on the operations to be performed, you can always refer to it.

To use this plugin, you first drop your first frame on the timeline. If you want each image to display for 4 seconds for example, you set a length of 4 x 9 = 36 seconds for the first picture.

After applying the HFX Filter effect on this image, edit the HFX Filter, opening Hollywood FX for Studio. You will see the plugin in the Hollywood FX interface:

  1. Use the show/hide button to show or hide the album effects;
  2. Select the "00-Declic Video" group in the album tree;
  3. Double-click the 378-videowall effect to load it in the HFX interface;
  4. All configurable parameters are framed in red in the Effects tree.
 The plugin in Hollywood FX interface

These configurable parameters are contained in ten objects (top to bottom):

  1. Flat 1 : (This is the image that you put on the timeline on which you applied the HFX Filter effect). You do not change this media;
  2. Flat 3 to 10 :(These are the images that will each come to the foreground, in a pseudo-random fashion). They are associated with media video P_Host 3 to P_Host video 10 that you will have to replace with your own image in BMP or PNG format (HFX does not accept JPG) or video in AVI format;
  3. Flat 11 : (This is the background image, barely visible, it is there just to fill the background ...). It is associated with media video P_Host 11;
Step 3 : Substituting Media

As explained in the previous step, you will have to substitute your own media for the default media.

For each media file, numbers 3-11, you will apply the following procedure:

  1. Select the media to replace in the Effects tree.
  2. Click the folder icon to open the file dialog box that allows you to select your media;
  3. Select the folder that contains your media and your image in BMP or PNG or your video in AVI format. (In this case, check that the media has been interpreted correctly-Interlaced Upper First, Interlaced Lower First, or Non-Interlaced).

Step 4 : Different Uses for this Effect

You can use this effect in different ways:

  1. As a stand alone effect;
  2. Repeatedly;
  3. In combination with interspersed clips.

Note however that you can't insert conventional transitions between images modified using the HFX Filter effect and other images without getting unexpected results. Only transitions fades and scans may be used (Alpha Magic, Transitions 2D and 3D, Artistic ...).

Pictured here are some possible uses:

  1. Image with a duration of 36 seconds where an HFX Filter effect using the 378-videowall is applied to present eight other images;
  2. Image with a duration of 4 seconds with a fade transition for the input and output;
  3. Image with a duration of 36 seconds where an HFX Filter effect using the 378-videowall is applied to present eight other images;
  4. Image of a duration of 4 seconds with a fade to black transition for the output;
Examples of use

It's not great art, but it's easy and cheap ... cheeky
