Before we begin, let's clear up any confusion about the term "Reverse" ...
Hollywood FX is the original source for this inversion. In the help files for Hollywood 5.5 or 6.0 you will not find hardly any information on the topic or on the "Reverse Effect" or the "reversal" of transitions. Not since the Hollywood FX 4.6.7 user guide has there been any kind of coherent explanation in regards to "reverse path", and I quote:

"Reverse path:

  • Check the "Reverse Path" box. You can see the changes in real time in the preview.
  • Click the "Reverse Path" box to deselect it.

Now look at the preview. The effect is reversed: it is not the first video source that fades to reveal the second, but the second source that appears to cover the first video source ".
I think you begin to understand that the HFX reverse view path is not entirely reversing the way you had in mind ... Hence the gradual disinterest in this function that has no real value in HFX. The "Reverse Path" checkbox has transformed over time into a "reverse effect" button but without much success.

Step 1 : The Inversion Transitions in Hollywood FX and Pinnacle Studio

A transition is animated by envelopes containing keyframes for:

  • path.
  • morphing.
  • fade.
  • pivot points.
  • colors, opacity, brilliant point ...

So in all these envelopes, which keyframes are reversed? HFX doesn't seem able to answer this question. That is why, in general, the "Reverse" does not work satisfactorily in HFX and gives:

  • unexpected results in terms of effect and consistency of movement.
  • or no change because of the complexity of the transition, in particular when there are envelopes with overlapping master objects and subordinate objects, each with its own envelope, for example.
The "Invert" option in Hollywood FX
Different versions of Studio continued the concept and implemented a checkbox for "Invert" in the edit transition window. But the user guide is quick to point out: "A check box is available for reverse for some transitions to reverse the animation." This check box is available, as far as I know, for all HFX transitions with no guarantee it will work, in versions after S15. Up to version 15 Studio knew quite well which transitions could reverse but the software has been announced as "end of life". Above 15 should no longer be able to guarantee the reliability of this option. In conclusion, I think that one should not rely on the little Studio checkbox, let alone the HFX "reverse effect" button. The checkbox "Invert" in Studio

We had users who wanted to reverse the "Shipping Box" transition from HFX Volume 2 Industrial 2 and who failed in their attempts. This is a typical case of a complex transition that HFX won't even try to reverse even if you ask it. Since AVID Studio the inversion does not work on this transition and many others.

So you have two solutions:

  • You switch from the inversion.
  • You get your hands dirty to create a reverse transition.

If you're up for the second option, I suggest you reverse the "Shipping Box" transition.

Step 2 : Analysis of the "Shipping Box" Transition

This transition has only 5 keyframe envelopes that provide movement and animation in 3D space:

  • 1 envelope of 5 keyframes applied to the Master Null object that defines the path of the box in space.
  • 4 envelopes of 4 or 5 keyframes each to animate each of the four box flaps.
 

How do you track keyframe envelopes? It is a methodical process that involves examining each object and for each type of keyframe seeing if there is or is not an envelope.

Here is an example:

  1. After loading the HFX effect.
  2. Select the objects one after the other for review. Back 2 object does not contain any envelopes. Then look at the Master Null object.
  3. By clicking on one of the parameters, the drop-down list contains the parameters that make up the envelope. Parameters marked by the bracket determines a trajectory envelope.
  4. The envelope is made, for each keyframe, with all parameters included in the bracket.
  5. See whether or not there is a keyframe envelope indicated by a blue line.
  6. Each keyframe appears on a blue line time code.

Detail objects in the transition

Step 3 : Reversal of Envelopes

You have 5 envelopes to reverse. To get your feet wet, I suggest you start with the easiest, that of the Master Null object that provides the path for the box in 3D space. To work more precisely, set your timecode to "Percent", Setup/Timecode/Percent (See "Build your first transition with HFX."

The existing Master Null envelope:

If you enter the values manually, it's pretty long, tedious, and error prone. But, by judicious use of the copy and paste buttons on the keyframes it will go much faster.

For the envelopes of the 4 box flaps, it's a bit more complicated since it will do a double reverse:

  • Reversing the direction of movement (opening instead of closing).
  • Reversing the order of the movements of short and long flaps (Last closed = first opened).

In the original transition :

Short flaps close first, they have a keyframe 50% starting the closing movement.
Long flaps close last, they have a 75% keyframe starting the closing movement.

In the reverse transition   :

Long flaps open first, they have a keyframe at 50% which starts the opening movement.
Short flaps open last, they have a keyframe at 75% starting on opening movement.

You have only the values ​​highlighted in red to change.

Step 5 : Add Your Own Personal Touch

At this point, your transition is reversed, you just have to save it under a different name in the folder of your choice. But if you wish to add a more personal touch it is still possible by adding a 3D object..... for example ...

Now that you see the difficulty of reversing a transition, you can better understand why a new module has not been developed for the new versions of Studio to be used with a Hollywood FX software advertised as "no longer supported". angel
