If you used Mercalli V2 SAL (See "Installation and Overview Mercalli 2 - Stand Alone Version"), you will also see the similarities with Mercalli V4 SAL +. But note that Mercalli V4 (64-bit) is not available in a plugin version for Studio 18 so it only works as a "stand-alone" version. For Pinnacle Studio 18, you will still need Mercalli V2. After analyzing the clip to stabilize, Mercalli shows the adjustments it deems most appropriate to stabilize the video. You can then take the time to tweak the initial settings to further improve stabilization by making some changes in a few parameters, which allows you to save clips you never thought were useable.

The big advantage of Mercalli SAL V4 compared to Mercalli V2 SAL is that it allows you to do batch processing of clips that you can later combine into one file of stabilized clips in the order you want. The wealth of settings available to you is at a level hitherto unequaled, whether in the precision of the rolling-shutter compensation settings or in the treatment of camera optics (fisheye) that offers customized settings and 16 camcorder brands from ActionPro to Vivitar, through 20 custom settings for GoPro cameras. If your camcorder is not in this list, three generic settings are available for you.

Step 1: Installing the Software

If you have opened an account with proDAD (this is very easy with a valid email address and a password), you always have access to the download page of the trial versions. I recommend this approach because you will be able to see for yourself the quality of the product before buying it. I am proposing you use this approach to install the software and test it.

While logged into your account you will have access to the "Demo Version" tab where you have access to all the demo versions. By selecting "Mercalli SAL V4 + (Win) 64-bit for Windows 64-bit, you can:

  1. Download the mercalli-40-sal64bit.exe file.
  2. Save the file on your computer.
File loading the trial version

Once this file is saved on your hard drive, just run it. The usual warnings are shown to you before you run a file of this type.

  1. But the publisher is clearly identified and known.
  2. So I think you can safely run it without worrying...
Execute the downloaded file to launch

The extraction starts quickly and unzipping of files is very fast.

Either way, installation starts with the traditional welcome window and copyright information. The Welcome window and Information
Then comes the well known window for accepting the terms of the license agreement. Read the license agreement if you wish. Optionally, keep a copy, but you can't continue the installation if you don't accept the terms... The acceptance window of the license
Choose the target directory for your installation:

The installation program then offers a default installation directory: C:\Program Files\proDAD. A Mercalli subdirectory will be created automatically.

It is recommended that you accept the default settings offered by the installer.

Choosing the installation directory
The installer will recommend installation of a pack of video codecs. It is strongly recommended that you accept the option so Mercalli can function properly. Pack installation video codecs
The installation program automatically selects a number of default options and displays them for you.
Click the "Start the installation process."

The copying of installation files will only take a few seconds. Copy the installation files

Installation is complete. You can:

  1. Try Mercalli V4 SAL + now;
  2. Postpone opening it by simply exiting the installer...

If you start Mercalli, you can then:

  1. Go to the store before trying it.
  2. Copy / paste the activation code received by email.
  3. Unlock the trial version with the "Unlock" button.

  1. Or just continue testing in the trial version.

Step 2 : Getting Started with the Software
The Mercalli SAL V4 interface and it's small bug
Upon opening, the software displays this interface. Almost all controls are grayed out. Only the central band "Drop Media into the black area" flashes. Take note that there is nothing to do because you have not dropped your Video(s) in the central area (You can also use the traditional "Import Media" at the upper left). A small window offers 8 mini animation tutorials. A small display bug does not allow you to close the window but the bug disappears when viewing a mini tutorial. (Update: This bug is not present in the current English version, you are able to close the window)
The Mercalli SAL V4 interface

Once you have toured the animation tutorials, you can uncheck "After starting always open" so that this window will not open when starting Mercalli V4. If necessary, you can always recall them from the Help menu (?) / Video - Tutorial.

Step 3 : Conclusion

I won't ask you to take my word for it because I think once you have viewed the short mini tutorials one or two times, you will know as much as me ... Of course, there is a learning curve, but when you have seen the video I prepared for you using some HD video extracts, I think you will love it.

This Mercalli V4 SAL + installation tutorial and Quick Start should give you a pretty good idea of usability and results that can be obtained.

Wow ! Looks like ProDad have stepped up their algorithms. I have V2 and looks like V4 does a lot more. - no cropping on very heavy shaking of camera.
Being 64 bit I would assume this would take less time to stabilize, or, perhaps the same time taking in account the new algorithms ??

Like I said I have V2 and use it on everything hand held. It gives that "Steadicam" look to your hand held roving footage - without the $$ of Steadicam equipment
