The "MICROPHONE" tool lets you leave comments on a video. These comments will be positioned on the Studio sound effects track as follows : Sound effect track - voice-over
STEP 1 :

Open the project and click on Setup. Then select VIDEO AND AUDIO PREFERENCES. On the drop-down lis under Voice-over recording, select your microphone. You can also change the channels and sample rate (the higher the value, the better the quality - the quality of your microphone is also important .. Needless to say don't expect a high quality mic to be able to always correct low sample rates). And don't forget that the higher you set the sample rate, the larger space you will need on your hard drive.

Voice-over recording, quality level

STEP 2 :

On the status line under the preview window, the audio icon is a microphone with a red line through it. That means it is turned off. Just click it to activate the audio. The audio sweep allows you to hear sounds when you move the cursor on the timeline across the parts of your project (called "scrubbing audio"). The faster you move the cursor, the faster the audio will play.

STEP 3 :

Click on TOOL BOX, then click RECORD VOICE-OVER.

This will open a dialog box where you can make level adjustments for recording the voiceovers.
Recording the voice-over

The recording level has defaults at the beginning of the voiceover but you can adjust the volume at any time. When you have finished recording, you can also "artificially" change the audio level playing on a portion of your time line. Recording level, volume

The recording level is set using the Record Level slider next to the vue meter (it turns from green to yellow and from yellow to red) for adjusting the Record levels so they do not rise too much or fall too low).

It is suggested that you make some tests speaking into your microphone, then adjust it so that the peak level does not exceed the yellow section (and never falls into the red).

STEP 4 :

Choosing a starting point in the timeline for the voiceovers (commentary):

Put the microphone where you intend to use it and say one sentence as a test, which will verify the record level. If you are satisfied, click on the RECORD button (which then becomes the STOP button).

A 3-2-1 countdown will play and then the recording light will come on.

starting voice over recording

When the LED indicates RECORDING and the video starts to play, you can begin to speak.

Finally, to complete the recording, click the STOP button. The light goes out and the clip of voiceover is automatically placed on the track sound effects and voiceovers.

Play the clip by selecting it and clicking the PLAY button.

At this point you can razor cut your soundtrack (to remove troublesome sounds, or delete white noise or static...). Note that you can also decrease or increase the audio level (click on the sound level and move the mouse to increase or decrease the volume - do the same a little further down the timeline to vary the volume curve).

Is there a way to listen to the video sound and still do a voice over? My video sound gets mutted during voice over recording so I can't hear what is going on.

Kevin G. By # Kevin G. @ Thursday, March 12, 2009 6:01 PM
Hi, for some time now whilst using pinnacle 9 and adding the voice over I am finding it increasingly frustrating that the recorded sound has been somehow clipped...so after only a few minutes what I am saying doe's not correspond to the frame I am looking at.
I have a sound recording program that does not clip the sound indeed when I do a comparison between the two Pinnacle is always seconds behind and you can hear my voice being shorten as you are listening...even adjusting the record level down and playing with the sample rate does not make any difference.

Is it a qlitch with the earlier program?

I am hoping some one can shed some light on this problem.
Many thanks Kevin

Hello Kevin,

Are you sure that you are running the latest Studio 9.3.5.10 or even higher 9.4 version ? That should not happen with these versions.
Keep us informed,

Sometimes when I voice-over in Studio 9.3, the voice-over "clips"each time it passes a transition in the film. Sometimes it does it frequently, other times only once or twice. I have tried different transitions in the same spot but it appears to make no difference. Can anyone help, please? it is driving me nuts

Déclic Vidéo FX By # Déclic Vidéo FX @ Sunday, July 26, 2009 6:44 AM
Hello Peter,

This is due to your computer, not fast enough to play the movie in a smooth way and to record the voice. Thus, you have full power which is dedicated to the transition, hence you have some glintch in the voice-over recording... You can try to stop your sentence before a transition (and then, you adjust the sound file if needed).

Thank you for that. I did have suspicions of that, but it is nice to have them confirmed. Thanks again

Is there a way of doing voice over while capturing the video? I mean I wish these video editing softwre can allow you to at least CHANGE the audio capture device.

Déclic Vidéo FX By # Déclic Vidéo FX @ Sunday, September 20, 2009 9:00 AM
Hello Nihal, there is no possibility with Pinnacle Studio 9 to Pinnacle Studio 14. Why not using the voice over function ???

DV FX

Nihal By # Nihal @ Sunday, September 20, 2009 10:09 AM
I need it to function while capturing audio. Why can't Voice Over Function work while capturing via camera?

Déclic Vidéo FX By # Déclic Vidéo FX @ Thursday, September 24, 2009 2:00 PM
Hello Nihal,

That's the way Pinnacle Studio is working... Sorry, I am not working for Pinnacle Studio, so I can not tell you more than this and why they took this decision.

Vin By # Vin @ Wednesday, October 14, 2009 10:34 AM
Hi I'm using studio 12.

After recording a voice-over once I could no longer hear any sound/audio in pinnacle. My speakers are working fine and I can hear audio with all other programs.

Nothing is muted in pinnacle or elsewhere, and there is no sound whether I try to play video clips in the storyboard, video from the videos tab, sound clips or any audio of any sort.

Does anyone know what has happened and how to fix it?

Thanks, Vin.

Mamounette By # Mamounette @ Wednesday, October 14, 2009 1:12 PM
Perhaps you've cut the sound / audio in Pinnacle. Look to the right of the soundtrack on the timeline if you have not locked on his. Also check if the volume adjustment reading below the preview screen is not closed.

tennand By # tennand @ Monday, February 8, 2010 9:26 AM
Thanks Mamounette for very helpful tips. During initial setup I appeared to have no choice of microphone as shown in your step 1. Because everything else worked except the mike I went to Windows Control Panel and made sure the mike worked in a basic manner. But it still did not work in Studio until I found your page & repeated step 1 which then showed my microphone as an option.

what microphones do you lot use because i have been searching for one for ages then i found this site, so could anyone enlighten me to a good microphone to use. Thanks

Déclic Vidéo FX By # Déclic Vidéo FX @ Wednesday, March 10, 2010 11:25 AM
Hello Matt,

On my side, I bought one good microphone long ago, I do not remember where and the brand (no name on it actually). Try to select one which is of good quality, for making songs (it's generally a good one, and avoid microphone for discussing through IP).

Anyone else have idea ?

Steven By # Steven @ Thursday, June 10, 2010 12:11 PM
Hey,

I am using pinnacle studio 12. The recording works fine and when i stop recording the voice over, it appears on my timeline as it should do. When i double click the voice-over i am perfectly able to hear the voice-over when i press play in the menu that pops up.

There is just one problem, when i press play in the normal screen, the voice-over can not be heard. The orange line of the voice-over sound is also on the very bottom, indicating that the sound of the voice-over is off. I can not however drag the orange line up.

Does anyone know what to do

I found out the solution myself, when I dragged the voice over from the sound effect track to the background music track I was able to adjust the volume
The only downside was that I could not play background music during my voice over with this method, but all right.

Ok Steven,

Thanks for the feedback (and sorry for replying so late, I never received your notification email). It seems that I did not understood your question first. That's true, when recodring voice-over, you can not hear the background music or any other music. Sorry, I did not understand well.

Have fun with Studio,

Déclic Vidéo FX By # Déclic Vidéo FX @ Sunday, July 8, 2012 3:29 PM
Hello Gabe,

The problem is often linked to a problem with the settings of the audio card, try to check all parameters of your audio card, somewhere it should be set to 0 or OFF or mute mode.

Keep us informed.
