Any use of the following tip is the sole responsibility of the user. I cannot accept liability for any loss of data on your computer (always make regular backups !!...).

Purpose of this tutorial :

Learning to create a PIP, ie display two video scenes simultaneously on the screen (a background, and the "window").

Prerequisites :

  • Tuto-2 General tutorial / Easy FX Editor
  • Tuto-3 Prepare the saving of HFX effect
  • Tuto-1 Files with .HFZ extensions

This effect is a filter and does not appear as a transition: the viewing of the two scenes is done at the same time. We will see later how to make a PIP with a fade in and fade out, ie showing the second video scene gradually. Likewise, we will see how to move the second video scene across the background (to ensure that it glides over the background).

In this tutorial, we will call the video which takes place in the background scene 1, and scene 2 (or clip 2) will be the video in the small window.

Take note that most recent Pinnacle Studio version already include a PIP tool. Nevertheless, it does not include all flexibility allowed by HFX (parameters modification, tilting view, key framing, ...). For example, you can add multiple PIP window with this HFX technic.... Next tutorials will present these technics.

Step 1
  1. As we will be creating an entirely new effect and won't be changing an existing effect, just open Easy FX Editor using the "Start Menu" (Start> Pinnacle> Easy FX Editor). If you do not find it in the start menu, just launch Easy FX Editor.exe (search on your computer).

Start menu to launch Easy FX Editor

Check the proper setting of the Easy FX Editor using the "Tuto-2 General tutorial / Easy FX Editor" from step 2.

Step 2

  1. To create a new effect, simply select from the menu: "File> New". The window for the FX tree will be empty :
The window for the FX tree is empty :

The FX tree of Hollywood FX album

  1. Because we will display two video clips, we have to create the two "objects "(windows) to host the video scenes. To do so, we must look in the folder tree for the "Objects" folder and open it by clicking on the icon representing a "+" sign (close the open effects by clicking on the sign "-- "To see more clearly). Then just select the "Simple" folder to show the various objects that we need:

The HFX tree of Hollywood FX effect

  1. We'll include in our effect the "Back 2" and "Flat 1" objects. We must click on the "Back 2" and move it to the FX panel tree ( use drag and drop by clicking and holding the left mouse button as you move the object).

  1. Repeat the procedure for "Flat 1".
 Flat 1 in FX tree

Do not forget to save your new project in your home directory (such as the PIP Singles - For the backup method, see the "Tuto-3 Prepare the saving of HFX effects". The words "Untitled" present in the FX tree must change to "Simple PIP".
Note: It may turn out, depending on how you moved the two objects, that "Flat 1" will be above "Back 2" in the FX tree. Don't worry, it doesn't affect the rest of the tutorial.

Step 3

We will now resize and move the two objects which contain our two video scenes. You may have noticed in the panel monitor (preview window) that the objects / video windows are "twisted"!

Window controls in Hollywood FX

  1. In the first step, rotate the window containing clip 1 and change the dimensions of this window. Select the "Flat 1" object. In the properties panel, we see that in the "Rotation" window Z is equal to 26 and that in the "Resize" window X and Y are not equal to 1.

Changing settings controls in Hollywood FX

  1. Click on each box and enter the following parameters (while watching the preview):
  • Rotation Z : 0
  • Resize X and Y : 1.000

Please note that once the value "1" is entered in parameter "Resize Y", it is necessary to tab to another window (for example z-axis) for the change to be reflected in the monitor panel (preview).

Scene 1 is properly sized.

Step 4

Let us look at the second window. Select the "Back 2" object in the FX tree. In the properties panel, we see that the parameter "Position Z" is equal to -4.000, and that the parameters of the "Resize - X / Y / Z " windows are 2,000.

To reduce this second window in front, change the "Position Z" setting to 0.100
(always watch the preview window to understand what is happening. For your general information, a value of -10.000 would reduce the video to a single point while at a value of 10.000, the video would be too far forward. The "Z Position" defines the position in depth video).

Edit settings resizing in a HFX tree

  1. Finally, in order to obtain a miniature video scene "change the parameters "Resize - X / Y / Z ": to 0.300
  1. (again, watch the preview window to understand what is happening).

Again, after entering the value of 0.300 in "Resize Z", tab to another window (for example Y) so that the value is updated in the preview window.

Note that if you had ended up in step 2 with "Flat 1" in front of "Back 2" in the FX tree, you would not have had a need to understand the value 0.100 for "position Z" parameter because 0.000 would have been sufficient. But I mention this for those who might want to understand because it has no real affect later on.

Remember to regularly save your project (File> Save). Take note of the new title in the corresponding content panel in the album section (remember to close the objects folder by clicking on the "-" and return to the personal directory where you've decided to store your effect).

Step 5

  1. You should have the preview window (panel display) that looks like this :
 the preview window (panel display)

  1. If the scene 2 window is not active (contour and "line" yellow), select it (left-click above it). Then place this smaller window in the desired location by using  (on the toolbar on the right, click on the icon represented by 4 arrows).
The Move Tool in Hollywood FX

  1. We'll have to move . We will select, for example, a position in the upper left corner:
The small window at the desired location

The steps for creating the effect are finished! Save your file (File> Save). Then exit the Easy FX Editor (File> Close).

If you do not understand everything or if you do not have time to follow this tutorial, you can download the effect: 249_PIPSimple.hfz
For hfz file usage, refer to "Tuto-1 Files with .HFZ extension"

Step 6
  1. We can now apply the effect in Pinnacle Studio to see the result. We will follow these steps together, because there are still a few tricks to learn to take full advantage of the effect.
  1. Open Pinnacle Studio.
  1. Insert 2  video scenes of any kind (duration doesn't matter, however, the maximum length will be equal to the length of the shortest scene).
Reminder: Scene1 is the one that takes place in
background while scene 2 is the video in the small window.
For this tutorial, I used Pinnacle video: Photoshoot.mpg
(scenes No. 1 & No. 4). If you do not possess the demo video distributed with older Studio version, you can download it (courtesy of AVID) in the "Associated Links" section of this page below (right click / Save Target As).
View of the album and the timeline of Pinnacle Studio

First tip: as a general rule, when two scenes take place simultaneously, you do not want to hear the sound of both scenes. So we will remove the audio from scene 2:

  1. Lock the main video track (click on the little padlock on the far right of the screen on Studio 9 - 12, at the extreme left on Studio 8).
 Lock the main video track

 The time line of Studio

  1. Select the audio track of scene 2
  1. Right click on the timeline and select "Delete" (or "Clear" on Studio 8)
  1. Unlock the video track (click again on the padlock)

  1. Insert the "PIP Simple" effect, you should see it in the list of Studio transitions (if this is not the case, please consult Step 5 tutorial 4 - Organise your HFX effects).
Insert the "PIP Simple" effect

  1. So the effect will take place over the duration of scene 2, "pull the effect" on the right side.

During the stretching operation the effect (the sound will seem not to follow and the effect will look like two scenes) After completing the transaction (the sound automatically adjusts)
A vue of the time line of Studio An other vue of the time line of Studio

Step 7

Everything is ready !!... We just have to finish rendering to see the effect!

Second hint: once rendering is completed, we must integrate it into your timeline. Come back to the timeline where you work and insert the sequence as you would a normal video. CUT between 1 and 4 images from the clip (indeed, you will have noticed that there are still a few images at the end).

View the results :

And you are done!

!! BONUS !!

At step 5, you can change the position of course, and possibly make a slight rotation of the video: "Rotate" tool (below the "Move" tool). This way, you understand how powerful HFX can be. Rotate video, change the appearance of the PIP, etc... Note that if you turn your video, it may be necessary to modify the "V" parameter.

An example is provided here : 249_PIPSimplebonus.hfz

Visualise the result with Bonus effet :

Want to do more ? Duplicate the window object and you have two PIP movies... Do not know how to proceed ? Please check our next tutorial which is explaining how to reach this goal.

{Thanks to Loosecannon for the fine tuning}
