Disclaimer: Warning, these modifications are done under your own responsibility. HollywoodFX 5.1 is not supported by Pinnacle for Adobe Premiere Pro. This tip and trick should work for all versions of Adobe Premiere Pro. It has been extensively tested with Adobe Premiere Pro CS3.

OVERVIEW:

IMPORTANT: When Windows XP is installed, the default Folder Options setting is to HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES. File extensions are usually three or four letter codes at the end of computer file names that tell the operating system what kind of file they are dealing with. Examples of common file extensions are .EXE,  .JPG,  .BMP,  .AVI, etc

In this tutorial we will be copying some .VFX files from the C:\Program Files\Pinnacle\Hollywood FX 5\Host Plugins folder to the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro CS3\Plug-ins\en_US folder and renaming them from the .VFX extension to the .PRM extension that Premiere Pro is looking for.

The following step MUST be followed before the file extension can be changed.

From Windows Explorer, select TOOLS/ FOLDER OPTIONS. Select TOOLS/ FOLDER OPTIONS in Windows Explorer
From the VIEW tab, UNCHECK "Hide extensions for known file types".  Press OK. UNCHECK "Hide extensions for known file types"
Additionally, it helps to set your display to DETAILS view... Display to DETAILS view
Navigate to C:\Program Files\Pinnacle\Hollywood FX 5\Host Plugins

EDITION FOLDER - Contains the "Video Transitions" plugin (HfxEdt5.vfx) - The other file, (HfxEdt46.vfx) can be ignored.

EDITIONFILTER FOLDER - Contains the "Video Filters" plug-in (Fl-HfxEdt5.vfx) - The other file (Fl-HfxEdt46.vfx) can be ignored.

STUDIO FOLDER - Contains the plugins (.DLL files) for Pinnacle Studio. Disregard this folder for Premiere Pro installation.
You will see three folders: EDITION, EDITIONFILTER, and STUDIO. You will see three folders: EDITION, EDITIONFILTER, and STUDIO.
Navigate to C:\Program Files\Pinnacle\Hollywood FX 5\Host Plugins\Edition.

Right-click the file "HfxEdt5.vfx" and select COPY.
Navigate to C:\Program Files\Pinnacle\Hollywood FX 5\Host Plugins\Edition.
Navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro CS3\Plug-ins.

Hold mouse over en_US folder and right-click PASTE. This will copy the file into the en_US folder.

NOTE: If Premiere Pro is not installed with US English as the language, then the name of the folder to paste to will vary. For example, for French the folder is called "fr_FR", etc.
Navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro CS3\Plug-ins.
Navigate to C:\Program Files\Pinnacle\Hollywood FX 5\Host Plugins\EditionFilter.

Right-click the file "Fl-HfxEdt5.vfx" and select COPY.
Navigate to C:\Program Files\Pinnacle\Hollywood FX 5\Host Plugins\EditionFilter
Navigate back to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro CS3\Plug-ins.

Hold mouse over en_US folder and right-click PASTE again. This will copy the file into the en_US folder.

NOTE: If Premiere Pro is not installed with US English as the language, then the name of the folder to paste to will vary. For example, for French the folder is called "fr_FR", etc.
Navigate back to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro CS3\Plug-ins.
Navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe Premiere Pro CS3\Plug-ins\en_US (or installed language folder name - see above)

Right-click the file Fl-HfxEdt5.vfx and selct RENAME. Replace the ".vfx" portion of the filename with ".prm" - press ENTER.
Navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe Premiere Pro CS3\Plug-ins\en_US
Also, right-click the file HfxEdt5.vfx and select RENAME. Replace the ".vfx" portion of the filename with ".prm" - press ENTER.  Also, right-click the file HfxEdt5.vfx and select RENAME. Replace the ".vfx" portion of the filename with ".prm" - press ENTER.

After renaming the files in the C:\Program Files\Adobe Premiere Pro CS3\Plug-ins\en_US folder from the .VFX extension to the .PRM extension, Hollywood FX Pro 5.1 will be installed into Adobe Premiere Pro as a plug-in. It can be accessed from the Effects Panel, both as a "Video Transition" AND a "Video Effect."

Remember, if your installed language for Adobe Premiere Pro is NOT English, then your plug-ins folder will not contain a "en_US" folder. Adjust accordingly. Hope this helps!

Great Tip. working great!

Loosecannon By # Loosecannon @ Sunday, September 14, 2008 3:26 PM
I was able to get the files showing in Premiere Pro CS3 but I couldn't get past the keycode so everything was watermarked.

Did you have issues with that and if so, how did you solve it?

I have had 5.5 and 6.0 installed and working great for years and installed 5.2 from my old S9 disc just to use in Premiere Pro. But I can't find out how to get a keycode to unlock it.

Michael By # Michael @ Sunday, October 26, 2008 11:20 AM
Hello, my name is Michael. I have have HFX Gold and 5.1 for years as well. I made effects in Gold and 5.1 when I used Premiere 6.5. I reformatted the hard drive to rid a virus, reinstalled everything, but instead of Premiere 6.5 I bought Premiere Pro CS3 on. I installed HFX Gold and get "Unable to start the License Tool program". I installed HFX 5.1 and some of my fx are now watermarked with the word "PRO" including ALL the ones I had previously created!!!!!!!

Any help would be appreciated!!

Hello Michael,
Did you try to use the Windows Start menu, HFX > Enter your plus/Pro HFX serial number. It should help. Otherwise, I have no ideas...

Déclic Vidéo FX By # Déclic Vidéo FX @ Saturday, January 23, 2010 11:29 PM
Hello Bgriffith,

To my knowledge, it only works with Adobe Premiere Pro V5.1
For Elements, I think it does not work. You might ask in Adobe forum, I know that this tutorial has already been discussed in some forums. Maybe other people might have the solution ? If it's the case, please come back to give the solution to other people.

Thanks,

I did everything as U told, hollywood fx appears on both video effects and transitions. (premiere 2.0). but only one transition or effect appears there (flying windows) what about the others? how to put them in. thanx in advance. p.s. sorry for my english (not american or english people)

Déclic Vidéo FX By # Déclic Vidéo FX @ Friday, April 2, 2010 11:24 AM
Hello mere fizi,

I do not use Premiere 2.0, so it's very difficult for me to help you. I just hosted this tutorial, and Bryan who makes it would be the best person to answer your question. Nevertheless, I think that it's normal to see only one transition, you add it to your video, and then you should have a button called "edit" which allow you to choose which transition to apply. Right ??

Hello DK,

You need to own an official HFX version, and to buy corresponding licence. Otherwise, take note that this tutorial was done for HFX V5.1 and CS3. I do not know if it's also compatible with CS4.

mere fizi By # mere fizi @ Wednesday, November 3, 2010 6:33 PM
Hello! many years ago I used to edit with premiere pro 1.5 or 7 (the same, version with the horse) I had as well canopus video FX transitions package done on purpous for this version, when U install this version (It seems no other exists) U have to check premiere pro box, so the plugin can go to the premieres one and make this working good. updating my camera I update my premiere to cs3 and cs4 but being honest it is very much better premiere pro 2.0 so I decide for 2.0 version. installing canopus there was no box to check for premiere as it happens with 1.5 version, So reading your tutorial about hollywood FX which is wonderfull tutorial, I inserted canopus with premiere 1.5 and found plugin named "PrmVIDEOFX.PRM" (this is original named plugin I have copy pasted it) then uninstall 1.5 and reinstall premiere 2.0. after I copy this plugin as it is at plugin En-Us folder, the same way as with pinnacle HFX and it works great at video transitions, originally the same way as HFX. Hope to be as helpful as U have been to me thanx and sorry for my english.
regards Mere Fizi

Hello,
I have installed adobe premiere pro 1.5 and canopus video fx. But canopus is not found in adobe premiere effects bar. How I work with canopus video fx in adobe premiere pro 1.5. Please help me.

mere fizi By # mere fizi @ Thursday, December 23, 2010 2:12 PM
@Manab Naskar. if it is installed correctly then it has to be on the video transition bar, if not try to find with search the "PrmVIDEOFX.PRM" file and copy it to en_us folder in premiere plugins. differently from hollywood FX it only shows at transition bar. HFX shows at both transitions and effects.
to use canopus VFX is the same method as HFX by using customize option.

Déclic Vidéo FX By # Déclic Vidéo FX @ Friday, December 24, 2010 9:01 AM
Thanks a lot mere fizi for the answer.
Mere Fizi, would you be ready to propose a tutorial for achieving this, maybe in a more clear way than in this comment ?? If you agree, we can get in touch, and you can propose a tutorial similar to this one, so people can find their way for installing Canopus Video FX in premiere as well...
What do you think ??

DV FX

mere fizi By # mere fizi @ Saturday, December 25, 2010 5:50 PM
as I said at my first comments, the plugin can not be found at canopus folder when it is installed. canopus video fx is produced for premiere pro 1.5 only. first you have to install premiere pro 1.5. after you install canopus video fx and during installation it asks which program you want to choose for using fx, a box appears with name premiere pro 7 or 1.5. you have to check this box. finish installation. now the plugin named "PrmVIDEOFX.PRM" is at premiere pro plugins. to use this plugin to other premieres (I am using it with cs3 now) you have to copy it and save to a folder of your choice. after saving this plugin you can use it with CS3 and CS4 (not CS5). I repeat this is the only way to get this plugin. now that you have the plugin saved, you just copy it to CS3 or CS4 plugin/en_us folder.
if you have canopus video fx, but you do not have premiere pro 1.5, you can not find the plugin "PrmVIDEOFX.PRM" because this program is produced for 1.5 only. hope this time I have been more specific. it is working fine for me with premiere pro cs3. it also worked on CS4 but I do not use CS4 because very long time export to media instead of export to movie in CS3.

Déclic Vidéo FX By # Déclic Vidéo FX @ Tuesday, January 24, 2012 3:33 PM
Hello Rocky,

In Folder and Search Options, View tab, you should UNTICK "Hide extensions for known file types". Then, try to rename your file and it should do the trick.

Do not forget that this tip only works for HFX V5.1 and Adobe Premiere Pro CS3. Have fun,
