There is something that we have never discussed in our tutorials. That is cloning. Rest assured we will not carry out any type of genetic manipulations. We'll take the word cloning in the sense of a programming language: "Cloning is the process of duplicating an instance of an object. You already know that a HFX effect usually consists of several objects. Under certain circumstances, it is necessary to have several copies (or instances) of the same object in the HFX tree. Instead of creating copies one by one, it is possible to select an object and then clone it X number of times to get X identical objects in one transition.

Step1 : Several images to help explain the principle

Open Hollywood FX directly from the Easy_FX.exe program. You create a new effect from the File/New menu.

The tree window doesn't have any objects. So,only the name of the new "FX Untitled" effect and the "Camera" are displayed. You may view the album using the "Show / Hide tracks" button (the big round button to the right of the Hollywood FX window) and look in the tree from the "Objects / Simple" album.

HFX Album Tree
  1. Using the mouse, drag a "Back 1" object under the "Camera" object in the effect tree;
  2. Then drag a "Back 2" object under the "Back 1" object;
  3. Select the "Back 2" object and re-size it to 1/4 of its original size. You can also reduce the size by using the the "Resize" button, or more precisely by entering 0250 in the "Resize" fields X and Y;
  4. You should now see the screenshot below.
Construction of a Simple Tree

Position the "Back 2" object in the upper right hand corner of the window. To perform the operation:

  1. Set position X to 1.500;
  2. Set position Y to 1.100.
Position an Object for Cloning
We now arrive at the cloning step.

You will now clone the "Back 2" object.

  1. Select the "Back 2" object by right clicking on the object;
  2. In the context menu that opens, click, "Clone".
Selecting an object to clone in the tree

This click opens the "Clone an object" window. I'll let you work out the other parameters once you are able to use our previous tutorials. To get 4 "Back 2" objects, you create 3 clones;

  1. Keep the box next to "New Video Host" checked.
  2. Thus the creation of videos will be incremented automatically from the video 3 (default);
  3. Set the X position to -1.000;
  4. Set the Y position to -0750
If you set the position parameters X and Y to 0, the 3 clones would be created exactly superimposed on each other. While here, each clone will be created with a shift of position relative to the previous object ... you will notice this immediately ... by clicking the "Create Clone" button at the bottom of the window.
Clone window in Hollywood HFX

Magic, no?

In the effect tree, you will now see the 3 clones that we just created in the preview window. Each is offset to the the other by the parameters set earlier in X and Y.

And most definitely, we could have made it more compicated...Look at effect 253-croix .

The main advantage is saving time.

Creation of Clones

The clones created are static...Now all we have to do is give them a framework to move within as a group or as individuals!

Step 2 : Practical Application

In several of our HFX free effects, you find the "Text" subject which allows you to set the default text and adapt to your needs or translate it. This "Text" object can not be on one line. So if you want 3 lines of text, you must create 2 other objects manually or use the cloning procedure. The advantage of cloning is that you are sure that the objects are created absolutely identical to the original object because in HFX, it is not possible to copy / paste an object in the effect tree. By cloning the "Text" object you clone all of the properties of the text.

  1. To create a new object, you must drag the "Back 1" object under the object titled "Caméra";
  2. Search in the album tree for the 3D Text/Plugin and then slide the "Text3D plugin under the "Back1 object"

Now is the time to choose your font, size, color characteristics (face, back, side, bevel), extrusion, insert, text quality ...(See "Tuto-7 Warps, Filters and 3D Text"). While this set of parameters is relatively long, the clones will be automatically reproduced. Select the "Text3d" object with a right click to get the cloning menu item.

Using object "Text3D"
  1. To have 3 lines, you need to add 2 clones of the "Text" object;
  2. Uncheck the box that says, "New video host"
  3. Change the setting for Y to = -0.500. Therefore, the clones will be shifted vertically, but not horizontally.
Cloning the Object "Text3D"
You will see them in the tree and the effect is seen in the preview window. But there is something like a bug ... Both clones created do not have the text3d plugin "which allows editing of the text. You have 3 items of "Text" but only the text of the first object can be changed.

The 2 clones are created

Setting the "Text" object is quite long, but it is very interesting to clone it anyway. So, before you clone, you will need to apply the text3d plugin "(face, back, side, bevel), extrusion, insert, text quality ...(See "Tuto-7 Warps, Filters and 3D Text").

Then, instead of cloning the "Text" object, clone the text3d plugin. Contrary to what we've seen so far, no "Clone an object" window will open.

Repeat this cloning operation as many times as necessary.

Cloning the plugin "Text3D"

In contrast, you may find that your text3d plugin "has been cloned with the settings that you've applied to the the initial "text3d" plugin. You don't see it in the preview window as it is precisely superimposed on the original plugin reference and is not independent because it is part of the same object.

The plugin is cloned

To make this plugin independent, right-click anywhere in the effect tree and choose "Add null object".

Addition of a null object

The null object "Object" is listed at the bottom of the tree. You need to drag the clone that you just made using the mouse.

Displacement of the cloned plugin

The object "Object" is automatically renamed "Text 1" and you get two "Text" objects which are identical and can be manipulated and modified separately.

Do not try this cloning method in the user manual, as you will waste your time...

Final result

You have now made your first clone...
No worry, we will see in a future tutorial how to use it !
