Pinnacle Studio 14

Avid is launching Pinnacle Studio 14

It's official now, the non-linear video editing software pinnacle studio 14 HD will be available at the end of September 2009. Most "on the ball" people have certainly noticed that we "jumped over" the Pinnacle Studio 13 version, probably due to triskaidekaphobia ? Two and a half years after Studio 11 (1), a little bit more than one year after Studio 12 (2), let's find out what is inside this latest release, Pinnacle Studio HD version 14.

Studio HD 14 is available in 3 versions:

Pinnacle Studio 14 HD  Pinnacle Studio HD 14 ULTIMATE  Pinnacle Studio 14 HD ULTIMATE COLLECTION
Pinnacle Studio 14 HD (base) Pinnacle Studio 14 HD
ULTIMATE
Pinnacle Studio 14 HD
ULTIMATE COLLECTION

The basics are always the same with non-linear video editing software, capture your movie and edit it to share with friends and family, ... (the "non-linear video editing software" term means that you can place your sequence in the desired order, you do not need to arrange them by date/hour). For advanced users or beginners, the interface is always based on the drag-and-drop technique for videos as well as photos hosted on your computer. They can be captured with your video or still digital camera, in HD, AVCHD (High Définition) or SD (Standard Definition). Add music, sounds, effects, transitions or animated tites with Pinnacle Montage, to obtain a perfect movie that you will export to DVD, Blu-Ray disc, share on a public website, portable phone, iPod, Nintendo Wii, etc...

What are the features ? What's new ?

First of all, the 3 options offer:

  • HD editing,
  • straight to DVD, YouTube (with wide-screen export 16:9), and other media (see below).

New features in these 3 options are :

  • stop motion is an animation technique to make a physically manipulated object appear to move on its own,
  • fluid image stabilization for shaky camera shots, using a specific AVID technology (within Studio 12, you have maybe already used the well-known proDAD Mercalli plugin). Let's see the behavior between them, we will keep you informed and we will probably do some cross tests.
  • export movies for Flash, QuickTime, improved AVCHD, PS3, Nintendo Wii, XBox and more
  • motion titling and new title designs
  • DVD menus, effects, and more than 80 Montage Themes

Pinnacle Studio 14 interface

So, which version do you prefer, S14 HD, Ultimate or Ultimate Collection ?

Compared to Pinnacle Studio HD 14, ULTIMATE also includes:

  • Dolby-Digital 5.1 (also possible with HD basic version, but as a paid add-on)
  • BD Blu-Ray export as well as HD DVD
  • RedGiant plugins: ToonIt and Knoll Light Factory

Compared to Pinnacle Studio HD 14 Ultimate, ULTIMATE COLLECTION also includes:

  • RedGiant plugins: MagicBullet Looks, Trapcode Shine, 3D Stroke and Particular

What are Red Giants plugins ?

Red Giant Software was founded in 2002 by industry veterans to develop and distribute special effects tools for digital video & film professionals. They develop their own applications but also publish other people's technology. Red Giant plugins have been used in thousands of feature films, like "Quantum of Solace" (click to view the sequence where the "Particular" plugin has been used), "Angels & Demons" ("Particular" plugin), "Dream Girls"("Knoll Light Factory" plugin),  ... following are some examples :

RedGiant Plugins (click on the following images for an overview - must have the QuickTime plugin )

RedGiant ToonIt RedGiant Knoll Light Factory RedGiant Magic Bullet
ToonIt (ULTIMATE and above) Knoll Light Factory
(ULTIMATE and above)

MagicBullet Looks (ULTIMATE COLLECTION)

RedGiant Shine RedGiant 3D Stroke RedGiant Particular
TrapCode Shine (ULTIMATE COLLECTION) 3D Stroke (ULTIMATE COLLECTION) Particular (ULTIMATE COLLECTION)

Hello Gert,

Thanks for the congratulations.

About the tests : that's just to give other people an overview of what can be done with Studio 14 (and what can not be done). Which kind of new functionnality, what's new, etc...
Concerning XP, Vista and Windows 7, there are plenty of beta testers who already did the job. So for sure, if beta tester done their job and Pinnacle team took into account the various issues, we should not have any problem. But you already know how it looks like with every new release... (not only for Pinnacle).
But I am quite confident for this one ! Just wait a little bit before the next update, stay tuned and do not forget to check your subscription to our newsletter !

I have studio 11 now ,is there a way to install Studio 14 on a new computer as an update?I had planned to switch to liquid but I learned from one of the original beta testers that a completely new app. is coming in the next year to replace it .In the meantime I would like to upgrade with a new computer and software.

Great news DeclicVideo Team!

I wish there should be MOV clips import possible in the new version (with alpha-channel recognizig) otherwise PS14HD will be still almost the only great NLE tool without such an option!

If it is not implemented, please consider that as an info to PinnacleSys guys from your side, as Beta-Testers :)

Best regards,

Beathan,

Do you have any example of this ?? On my side, I tried with Studio 12 and BluffTitler, the transparency is taken into account (but I never tried on a MOV file).

I can not directly put MOV files without transcoding them into AVI-PAL with alpha, unfortunatelly [ProCoder]
I tried it on Edius Trial version and it worked perfectly. As it is in Adobe Premiere...

Pinnacle Studio 12 recognizes MOV files only from the camera folder directly (e.q. Panasonic) not as a separate clip located on the hard disc, usefull for overlaying... :(

Will you be offering a 3:2 pulldown removal option so that you can use 24p/30p in 60i? I currently have to use VoltaicHD to remove the 3:2 pulldown but would prefer to have this done within Pinnacle.

Can you clarify pulldown ? I had a look to some articles on the net, but I am not familiar with this.

Telecine info

When shooting in NTSC, you shoot at 24p or 30p in a 60i container. If you were shooting at 25p, you have no problem with extra frames being inserted. Since not all AVCHD cams shoot in native 24p, you need to remove the 3:2 pulldown (the extra frames) in order to have the film=like qualities of 24p to be seen AND allow for the flags to remain from the 24p mode. VoltaicHD does this, but adds an element to your workflow.

Um. Are you with Pinnacle or a beta tester? If you are not with Pinnacle, could you forward my inquires to them?

No need to flood this comment section !
If you don't get an answer to your question it's just a matter of time or good understanding from us.

We are not affiliated in any ways to Pinnacle. This website is only the work of non-professionnal people.

Concerning your question, I'm not sure at all that Studio is able to handle 24p footages which is tipically a prosumer format used in highend material.

"Rectification : I'm sure you will be pleased to learn that Studio 14 can import 24p footages."

Thanks...but will it import in the 60i container which many AVCHD codecs do...most shoot the video in 60i and then it must be de-interlaced. When that happens, especially with Canon AVCHD, all of the 24p flags are lost. In order to import the 24p video, the container must be opened and the 24p/30p video must be removed. The question is, will Studio 14 do the 2:3 pulldown from 60i and leave the 24p/30p in its original form, or must I still use a program such as VoltaicHD to remove the 2:3 pulldown and THEN import the 24p video into Studio 14. Studio 12 already supports 24p...it is the 60i to 24p/30p that is the question...FYI

Once again, as soon as you contact me with some clips, I may try....
I just received a clip, someone claimed it was AVCHD lite. It works fine, but it also works in S12, so I am wondering if the upgrade process change something, or if it is *NOT* an AVCHD lite clip... That's the reason why I need several clips to do the test (and to tell me which kind of test I need to do).

I bought and just installed studio 14 ultimate collection (upgrade from studio 9). No original studio 9 cd nor serial was requested (probably because studio 9 was registered with pinnacle).
Just played 5 minutes with studio 14 and already found problems.
- Import of a previous studio project displays all titles as half transparent.
- full scree Preview of thi project is "all black"
On a new studio 14 project:
- new title editor switches Vista to BASIC mode (!? - shame !)
- in title editor you cannot see typed text (whatever font/color/size).. as if text is set to full transparent...

If this is the beginning ....
Running on vista 64 home premium 4GB ram, ati 4850

Anyone having same problems ?

P.s. Opened case with avid support

I recently purchased a Canon HF S11 AVCVHD camcorder in the hopes of migrating to High Definition. I currently used AVID LIQUID 7.2, but it seems that it does not deal well with AVCHD input. I am considering buying STUDIO 14 when it is released to deal the AVCHD issues.
Ok, here is the questioon: Can I used 24P input with this program and add other SD scenes and .jpg shots and get a good result? If not 24P ("cinematic mode" in Canon), then what would you recommend? I am about to head to China for 3 weeks and plan on doing a lots of shooting.
Thanks.

I got an email offer tonight to purchase Studio HD Ultimate Collection Version 14 on upgrade for £55.00 UK pounds (3 day offer to save £14)
I am very tempted as i only have Studio 11 basic, but when i read on their site on also here that the Chroma keyer is not included on upgrade versions, well i was very disappointed and don't think i will buy it.
If i did buy it, how much more would i have to pay for the Chroma key plugin if they even offer that option?.

I think they are being a bit greedy leaving it out, just my opinion.

Jason.

Thanks for your answer DV FX.

FYI:
Problems persist with MOVING TITLE EDITOR.
All inserted text is "invisible" and often studio crashes on launching the moving title editor (old "static" title editor seems fine).

Avid support seems to have no clue. told me to reinstall: did but problems still there.

Also AVID support claims that TITLE EDITOR forcing vista to switch to BASIC view mode is NORMAL ! Never seen a serious Vista compatible application (espacially handling graphics) that is not aero compatible !

I just did some more testing by myself and SOLVED.

All the following S14 video options MUST be turned on:

- Enable high resolution preview

- hardware acceleration

- background rendering

Please note that now Moving Title editor NO LONGER SWITCHES to Vista BASIC
mode.

I am having the same problem in pinnacle 14 with Moving Title Editor as mentioned above. I have reset the preferences, reinstalled the program, deleted temp files and still as soon as I exit Moving Title Editor the program "stops responding". I have sent an email to Avid and spoke on their chat line three times....no answers. I hope there is a patch SOON!

DV FX, I bought the Studio HD 14 Ultimate Collection Upgrade on 28th September, the last day when i could save some money. I also bought the manual (big black book) and the backup DVD which came by UPS today.

I can not use the Chroma key in Studio HD 14, as that area is 'greyed out' it can not be used, Upgrade users did not get the Chroma keyer and i really need that to work.

Also i am having problems trying to remove the older Studio 11, i want it un-installed and to get some HDD space back on my laptop as i will only be using Studio HD 14 Ultimate Collection.

When i go to un-install programs, the installer runs and just before it gets to the end i get a windows error: Error Number: 0x80040303 (unhanded exception) then set-up terminates.
Un-install or Install can not run, also i tried putting in the master dvd for Studio 11, the same thing happens installer runs, then same error and exits.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium.

Any ideas how i remove the old Studio 11?
I only had Studio 11 for 2 months, it came with Dazzle Video Creator Platinum. I really wish i could get it off my computer.

Okay,, wow. The TITLE EDITOR>.. What a pain in the $#%. Well, I got a new system for our company.. Massive sys,,, i7quad core 3.33ghz , x58 chip set, 12gig ddr3 and so on.
Title editor worked GREAT at first. Had a powerful nvideia N 295 GTX vid card. Then I dicided to go with the ultimate. TWO Saphire ATI Radion HD 4870x2 cards, (best on the market)
Well the title editor still worked. Did some testing, amazing rendering btw. HOWEVER.. Last night I DID THE STUPID! I allowed WINDOWS UPDATE to auto install some 58 "important" updates. Well, that just screwed it all up.
Spent last 18 hrs installing, reading, updating, removing and so on. Ill give you a run down of what I found.
-Radon cards, WORKED GREAT FOR 2 DAYS,,,,,,,,,
, then updateded windows.. titles stopped working
-uninstalled all win updates,, but didint help.
-removed crosfire dual cards went to one Radon card, no good.
---- By the way,, I removed and updated drives, removed and reinstalled Pinnacle. I did a lot of junk.
- Decided to Put back in Nividia 295 card and installed original drivers.
----- GUESS WHAT<< IT WORKED GREAT!
Now, i wnated the power of the EXPENSIVE Radon cards so I uninstalled the nividia card and drivers
- Reinstalled the two sapphire Radon cards and drivers
TITLES WONT WORK... Same problem again.
KEY POINT!!! Dont miss this, it was not the Radon Card! It worked great until I updated windows.
It seems there is a software conflict with the drivers from Radon and Windows and or Pinnacle. Im unhappy because im sure its a simple fix if only Windows or Radon or Pinnacle would locate the bad driver/software.
Anyway, looks like I will have to re-install the smaller graphics card again and im stuck with $800 worth of new Radon HD 4870 x2 2gb cards. Again, before the windows update,, these cards blazed through everything including titles.
ANY IDEAS? please help if you can. If nothign else,, you guys now have a lot of info on this issue. Maybe this can help someone isolate the problem.

Been working with Studio 14 for a week now after upgrading from Studio 12. One of the main reasons I upgraded was to get the new Xbox HD compatible feature. Well after spending days with Pinnacle that new feature simply DOES NOT WORK. If you even add one transition to your project the make movie function will fail 100% of the time with a rendering error. Pinnacles final solution is to create the entire movie in a different format. Re-import this movie back into Studio and then re-create the whole movie in the Xbox format. First of all, working with AVCHD this takes many hours to do. Secondly, the quality is lost. This is the reason I wanted to created Xbox HD files directly. I want to return the software but then I found another big problem. I had Studio 12 before and was working on several projects. When you open an existing project in Studio 14 it will update your project to the new Studio 14 format and after that you can never open it again in Studio 12. Lastly, as if that isn't enought, I've had many errors and rendering failures with my several projects even though the same projects rendered properly in Studio 12.

I received my Pinnacle 14 yesterday and installed it on my Vista 64 machine. I had Pinnacle 12 installed but it has never worked since I installed it. (I have an XP unit it works well with)
After my initial install I tried to render a 5 minute project and Pinnacle worked perfect. Later I tried a 15 minute project and then I ran into a wall. When I tried to make a Mpeg2 File the "save as" screen came on (black) and the program froze. I did it a number of times. I imagine if I were to contact the tech line when I had similar problems with 12 and Vista they would tell me to continue re-loading Pinnacle 14 until I stopped calling.
It works great with Vista!

Installed Pinnacle 14 on my Vista System on Sunday and everything seemed to be running smoothly. Now it freezes when; I try to open a project, save a project or make a movie. Alll critically important when editing.
It works fine on my XP system.
I guess I'll call tech assist tomorrow. Why do I think they'll ask me to re-install it again?
Maybe I'll do that now!

Hi guys! Can U help me? I use 14 HD
I have a good sistem and I work verry good in AVCHD. It takes more time but is ok. I just have the same problem: in the "writing frames" process (after rendering in "make movie" sv hangs. Stops with the export error mesage
I observed that if I make a movie longer than 35-40 mins in AVCHD, hangs, under this time is ok. What happens in fact? Sv doesnt support a longer worflow? Can someoane "illuminate" me?
I use:
CPU Q 9450 2,66-2,66 GHz, nvidia 9600 GS, 4Gb RAM, 10000 rot/min - 1Tb HDD, Windows 7, sv 14 HD Ultimate downloaded.
Thank You!

I was experiencing many of the same issues with Pinnacle 14 on my Vista 64-bit unit as I've been reading, especially with the Motion Titles. So I invested in Ashampoo WinOptimizer and ran the scan a couple of times. It found a bunch of "stuff" to clean out and since then Pinnacle 14 has been working fine....for two weeks now. I already had CCleaner and Glary Utilities installed, but I guess Ashampoo found deeper clutter than was interfering with Pinnacle. Maybe my experience can be helpful to someone else.

Have just bought studio 14 ultimate, the only problem I have now is that the preview is black. Cannot play the video at all when editing, is there a setting I have overlooked?

This may sound stupid. I had similar issues with Vegas. Forget what it was, but I would get an error halfway through"..blah blah Don't have permission..."

On a whim, I uninstalled it. Rebooted and restarted again. Put the install "CD" in, I hit explore, right clicked on the set up . exe file. clicked "Run as administrator"...then did everything normal...

NEVER HAPPENED AGAIN!!!

Good Luck!

I downloaded the trial version and everything looked ok, so I bought s14. As soon as I tried a slomo on a gh1 720p/50 clip, I realized the AVCHD lite is NOT FULLY SUPPORTED. I asked for a refund and switched to sony vegas hd.

error replication: load a 720p/50 clip in the timeline, split it by half, remove the first part, the apply the speed effect for a slomo. The preview and output file are messed up.

vegas hd runs with no problems at all.

Hi,
I hope someone can help!
I had Pinnacle Studio Plus 9 on my PC (windows XP professional) with the extra features (unlock code) purchased.
My PC recently crashed (bue screen) but I recovered the data and re-loaded the Studio plus program from the disc.
At first it wouldn't accept the original unlock code emailed by Studio plus. I visited the website and gave them the passport number and a new unlock code was generated but still rejected by the program! I also noticed that it wouldn't open my most recent projects that were created after I purchased the activation key. The earlier (completed) projects, done without the extra features being activated would open fine.
Then after a while the extra features were mysteriously released anyway (probably by a Pinnacle cookie verifying the program) but it still would not open the projects ("Studio plus cannot open file") displayed with no reason .
I the downloaded the trial version of Pinncle Studio 14 Ultimate edition to see if it could open the projects and it does but without the ability to edit the sound!
It won't even allow you to mute the video soundtrack or the added music soundtrack line. It recognises where I have altered the sound levels and faded in or out etc on the timeline view but ignores the fades or variations on audio playback and ixes added misic with the orginal video audio. It did this on my laptop, so it's not a PC glitch. And the same thing happends with Studio 12.
Does the Studio 14 trial version lock access to the sound editing? I am afraid that if I buy the full version I may see the same problem.
I have looked around all the forums and threads but no one seems to have had the same perblem.
Any assistance would be greatly apprecaited as I spent hours on these projects!
Thanks,
Edward G.

Avid Delivers New Version of Pinnacle Studio Software Family
September 10th, 2009

Avid® today announced a major update to its family of Pinnacle Studio™ video editing solutions.  Widely regarded as the industry’s leading application for home video editing*, Pinnacle Studio software now offers an even broader array of HD capabilities with a new simplified user interface that makes it easier to manage content and an unified capture/import utility for the latest formats and camcorders. Other new features include:

  • A stop-motion capture for animated and fast-motion effects.
  • New content and enhancements for Pinnacle Montage.
  • Dynamic Motion Titler tool that includes a number of new templates.
  • A new stabilizer effect – leveraging the same technology used in Avid’s professional editing products to fix shaky camera shots.

The new Pinnacle Studio meets the needs of a wide range of consumers, from novices to video enthusiasts and semi-professionals.  The family of products includes Pinnacle Studio HD, Pinnacle Studio Ultimate and Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Collection, which offer a complete HDV & AVCHD workflow and allows consumers to export movies to Flash, QuickTime, PS3, Nintendo Wii, Xbox, Apple iPod and more. Pinnacle Studio Ultimate and Pinnacle Ultimate Collection also offer Blu-ray authoring with motion menus.

“This version of Studio absolutely rocks – it’s probably the best advance since the move to digital.  New built-in features help to make it very easy for newcomers and hobbyists to create Hollywood-like movies and to turn their family and holiday shoots into something really special,” said Pinnacle Studio Beta tester Mike Shaw, an international award-winning amateur movie maker. Shaw also highlighted the new user interface improvements, which make it easier for editors to find their way around, and praised the enhancements of Pinnacle Montage themes, as well as the new import features that make it easier to select the source of the movies consumers wish to import.

Alec Marshall, Director of Segment Marketing for Creative Enthusiasts at Avid, said, “A growing number of both video and point-and-shoot cameras now capture high-definition video, creating a burgeoning demand for editing tools that allow for high-quality export to the web, upload to YouTube, and creation of HD files for sharing. The latest version of Pinnacle Studio makes HD editing a breeze, empowering consumers to easily grab photos and videos from video cameras, still digital cameras or camera phones and easily bring that content to life using music, Pinnacle Montage Themes, animations and effects. Once finished, they can share their masterpieces with friends and family–or the world–with direct high-quality upload to YouTube, or by simply burning a DVD.”

Customers who purchase Pinnacle Studio Ultimate software receive two bonus professional plug-ins: ToonIt and Knoll Light factory effects from video masters Red Giant. Those who purchase Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Collection will receive the most complete solution, including a green sheet for Chroma key effects and six highly acclaimed professional plug-ins from Red Giant:

  • Shine ultra-fast light ray effects
  • ToonIt turns video into cartoon style animation
  • Knoll Light factory creates lens flares, sunsets & more
  • Magic Bullet Looks generates advanced video styles
  • 3D stroke creates glowing lines, swirling shapes, and 3D camera effects
  • Particular smoke, explosion, and abstract effects

Pricing & Availability
The price of Pinnacle Studio HD, Pinnacle Studio Ultimate and Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Collection remains the same as previous version: US$49.99, $99.99 and $129.99, respectively.  Pinnacle Studio is compatible with Windows Vista SP2 (Both 32-bit & 64-bit), Windows XP SP3 & Windows 7.
