That's it, everything is in the title ! Many of you are wondering if it is better to use the proDAD Mercalli stabilizer, or AVID Media Composer Fluid Stabilizer included in Studio 14. So I took a little shaky sequence, and I applied the 2 stabilizers, trying to do the best, here is what happens : I believe everyone is doing well in a particular area : AVID Stabilizer in terms of quick shake, proDAD Mercalli for flickers. But it may be a matter of setting and taste? ...

Very interesting. However we have found that footage stabilised with the Mercalli plugin to be virtually useless on the final DVD. The rendered footage looks good enough in the timeline and if you make an avi from it then it also looks good, but once it's on DVD it is terrible, flickering and far more shakey than the original. This is with PAL footage, no doubt Mercalli and Studio have only ever tested it on NTSC footage. We use a third party program to sort out stabilisation problems at the moment. I would be very interested if you were to output the AVID stabilised image (PAL version) to DVD and see what happens. Cheers Ian Thursday, September 24, 2009 2:03 PM

Niek Not used virtual DUB, tried a while back with S10 and had a few problems, maybe I'll give it a go again. The program we use which is extremely good is Steady Hand from www.goodervideo.com. (we have no connection to this company other than being a customer). The only problem with this is that you have to break up the film into many short AVIs because if you use frame zoom to fill and the film is very shakey then you will lose maybe 20% of the picture, which is fine for a short scene but you don't want it running throughout the whole film. How did you get the Mercalli filter onto the effects palette in Studio 14?

@ Ian Litchfield, On my side, I have several DVD made with Mercalli, without any trouble. But I am using the Expert version, and I have to search for the good setting before applying it. For the time being, I have unfortunately no time to render a DVD, I am very sorry... S14 has already reached several users, and some of them are wondering how to install it, so we are preparing the associated tutorial. Later on, we could come back to this issue with pleasure. @ Niek, To be honnest, I have never used VirtualDub deshaker, maybe saby has tried it once ? He is an expert with VirtualDub and he is making all our VDub tutorial. @ Alan Wells, I explain it in the article called " Pinnacle Studio 14: first impressions" in the section "and what about plugins". How about rolling shutter artifacts.I shot a lot of live music with a Cannon HV 20 .I have to hand hold it with loud(above 90db)bands to avoid jello.The bass seems to be the culprit.Any suggestions?
