That's it, everything is in the title ! Many of you are wondering if it is better to use the proDAD Mercalli stabilizer, or AVID Media Composer Fluid Stabilizer included in Studio 14. So I took a little shaky sequence, and I applied the 2 stabilizers, trying to do the best, here is what happens : I believe everyone is doing well in a particular area : AVID Stabilizer in terms of quick shake, proDAD Mercalli for flickers. But it may be a matter of setting and taste? ...
Note that the AVID stabilizer has only few parameters, but nevertheless seems well and yet effective. Thursday, September 24, 2009 1:16 PM
Very interesting. However we have found that footage stabilised with the Mercalli plugin to be virtually useless on the final DVD. The rendered footage looks good enough in the timeline and if you make an avi from it then it also looks good, but once it's on DVD it is terrible, flickering and far more shakey than the original. This is with PAL footage, no doubt Mercalli and Studio have only ever tested it on NTSC footage. We use a third party program to sort out stabilisation problems at the moment. I would be very interested if you were to output the AVID stabilised image (PAL version) to DVD and see what happens. Cheers Ian Thursday, September 24, 2009 2:03 PM
Thanks for this interesting comparison. How would you rate the AVID version opposite the VirtualDub deshaker ? Best regards Niek Thursday, September 24, 2009 2:52 PM
Niek Not used virtual DUB, tried a while back with S10 and had a few problems, maybe I'll give it a go again. The program we use which is extremely good is Steady Hand from www.goodervideo.com. (we have no connection to this company other than being a customer). The only problem with this is that you have to break up the film into many short AVIs because if you use frame zoom to fill and the film is very shakey then you will lose maybe 20% of the picture, which is fine for a short scene but you don't want it running throughout the whole film. Very Interesting ! I am sure there will be comments on that subject ! Thursday, September 24, 2009 4:27 PM
How did you get the Mercalli filter onto the effects palette in Studio 14?
Thursday, September 24, 2009 9:19 PM
@ Ian Litchfield, On my side, I have several DVD made with Mercalli, without any trouble. But I am using the Expert version, and I have to search for the good setting before applying it. For the time being, I have unfortunately no time to render a DVD, I am very sorry... S14 has already reached several users, and some of them are wondering how to install it, so we are preparing the associated tutorial. Later on, we could come back to this issue with pleasure. @ Niek, To be honnest, I have never used VirtualDub deshaker, maybe saby has tried it once ? He is an expert with VirtualDub and he is making all our VDub tutorial. @ Alan Wells, I explain it in the article called " Pinnacle Studio 14: first impressions" in the section "and what about plugins". You just need to follow the explanations. We will soon launch a tutorial for the installation. Regards, DV FX Friday, September 25, 2009 6:46 AM
.... and the winner is: MERCALLI !!! Saturday, September 26, 2009 11:54 PM
How about rolling shutter artifacts.I shot a lot of live music with a Cannon HV 20 .I have to hand hold it with loud(above 90db)bands to avoid jello. The bass seems to be the culprit.Any suggestions?

Hello Graham, What is rolling shutter artifacts ?? Your language is very technic for me in a non-native language, I am a little lost. Can you please explain a little bit your concern ? DV FX Thursday, October 01, 2009 6:49 PM
Hello Ian, Thanks for your reaction. In the mean time I have installed S14 and added the VirtualDub plug-in for testing purposes. As soon as I have a better view I will report the result here. Might take a while. thanks again Best regards Niek Tuesday, October 27, 2009 9:43 PM

September 10th, 2009
Avid® today announced a major update to its family of Pinnacle Studio™ video editing solutions. Widely regarded as the industry’s leading application for home video editing*, Pinnacle Studio software now offers an even broader array of HD capabilities with a new simplified user interface that makes it easier to manage content and an unified capture/import utility for the latest formats and camcorders. Other new features include:
- A stop-motion capture for animated and fast-motion effects.
- New content and enhancements for Pinnacle Montage.
- Dynamic Motion Titler tool that includes a number of new templates.
- A new stabilizer effect – leveraging the same technology used in Avid’s professional editing products to fix shaky camera shots.
The new Pinnacle Studio meets the needs of a wide range of consumers, from novices to video enthusiasts and semi-professionals. The family of products includes Pinnacle Studio HD, Pinnacle Studio Ultimate and Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Collection, which offer a complete HDV & AVCHD workflow and allows consumers to export movies to Flash, QuickTime, PS3, Nintendo Wii, Xbox, Apple iPod and more. Pinnacle Studio Ultimate and Pinnacle Ultimate Collection also offer Blu-ray authoring with motion menus.
“This version of Studio absolutely rocks – it’s probably the best advance since the move to digital. New built-in features help to make it very easy for newcomers and hobbyists to create Hollywood-like movies and to turn their family and holiday shoots into something really special,” said Pinnacle Studio Beta tester Mike Shaw, an international award-winning amateur movie maker. Shaw also highlighted the new user interface improvements, which make it easier for editors to find their way around, and praised the enhancements of Pinnacle Montage themes, as well as the new import features that make it easier to select the source of the movies consumers wish to import.
Alec Marshall, Director of Segment Marketing for Creative Enthusiasts at Avid, said, “A growing number of both video and point-and-shoot cameras now capture high-definition video, creating a burgeoning demand for editing tools that allow for high-quality export to the web, upload to YouTube, and creation of HD files for sharing. The latest version of Pinnacle Studio makes HD editing a breeze, empowering consumers to easily grab photos and videos from video cameras, still digital cameras or camera phones and easily bring that content to life using music, Pinnacle Montage Themes, animations and effects. Once finished, they can share their masterpieces with friends and family–or the world–with direct high-quality upload to YouTube, or by simply burning a DVD.”
Customers who purchase Pinnacle Studio Ultimate software receive two bonus professional plug-ins: ToonIt and Knoll Light factory effects from video masters Red Giant. Those who purchase Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Collection will receive the most complete solution, including a green sheet for Chroma key effects and six highly acclaimed professional plug-ins from Red Giant:
- Shine ultra-fast light ray effects
- ToonIt turns video into cartoon style animation
- Knoll Light factory creates lens flares, sunsets & more
- Magic Bullet Looks generates advanced video styles
- 3D stroke creates glowing lines, swirling shapes, and 3D camera effects
- Particular smoke, explosion, and abstract effects
