Preamble :

Heroglyph is available in the form of either a standalone software program, or as an integrated plugin for Studio. The version for Studio will be used here. Take note that we show an alternative method at the end of the tutorial, using Title Deko.

Step 1 : Open the plugin in Studio

Let's position the video on the timeline on which you want the text to appear. Then in the Video toolbox, select Add new effect. In the menu that appears choose the proDAD category and the Heroglyph 2.5 Title Filter effect. Click on OK, to apply the effect. You get this :

Click on Edit Heroglyph 2.5 Title Filter , then in the window that opens, use the settings shown below and select edit Title... :

In Heroglyph, open a new project :

Step 2 : Create and edit a text

In the preview zone, the message Enter a text or drop a graphic/medium here flashes :

It's time to enter the text you want.
By clicking on the bar above or below and keeping the left mouse button pressed, the text can be moved :

By double-clicking, stretching handles appear and you can enlarge the text at will :

Right-click on the text and in the context menu that opens, using Arrangement, you can achieve the same actions but this time by entering digits :

Add a little fantasy. It goes into Conception mode :

And in the Templates menu we choose a group of templates and then a template :

In my example I chose template #12 from the Large group. That is what we get :

Let's change the font :

For example Comic Sans MS :

The final result :

Step 3 : A few more steps and we animate the text

It is time to animate it all. Open the Effects editor :

Then apply the Fade IN effect Fondu to the Characters :

On the timeline you can see that a yellow area with a lightning bolt appeared at the beginning of the timeline object :

This is the fade in effect.
In fact, an effect may be applied at the beginning, throughout, or at the end of an object. Hence, the Fade IN effect, the Intermediate effect or the Fade OUT effect in the Edit effects window. If the object is some text, the effect can be applied to each character or each word or each line, even the entire block.

To view the effect in real-time, press the play button above the timeline or move the scrubber directly on the timeline :

Similarly we can stretch the timeline to change the time scale :

The last adjustment, set the cursor for Impression (hardness) to 100% in the Order tab :

At any time you can use the Undo/Redo button to correct any error :

Or even completely remove an effect if nothing works the way you wanted and you want to start over :

Bonus 1 : The title scrolls off the top of the screen

Once that effect is done, having the text scroll off the top of the screen is very simple. We create a Fade OUT effect with just one movement. For this, simply select the arrow that points up in the Movement  tab:

A fade out effect has been added on the timeline object, which we can control by means of the yellow zone at the end with a lightning bolt.

We can adjust the total length of the title and the duration of the fade in and fade out effects.
For the total length we stretch the end of the timeline object :

To set the duration of each effect we adjust the junction between yellow and blue:

To access all of these settings by entering the digits, open the Period of time window :

• Start point : the point on the timeline where the title begins
• Total duration : time display of title
• IN effect : fade in effect duration
• OUT effect : fade out effect duration

Press F12 on the keyboard to save your work in heroglyph and return to Studio.

This is the final result :

Bonus 2 : The typo error

Here, I will not tell you everything. You will have to do a litte work yourself ...

You need to know that you will have to copy/paste timeline objects using the second track of the timeline. You sprinkle it with a little fine positioning using the Position & size function, a pinch of adjustment for the length of objects and effects using the Period of time function and you should get this :

For those of you looking for the easiest method, I offer the gift of the Typewriter_bonus.hprj Heroglyph project file. Get it in the « Associated Files » section below and open it directly in Heroglyph in order to have the effect immediatly applied.

Bonus 3 : The DV's method

Here, I must tell you that DV insisted rather strongly that I show it to you. But note, cases of spontaneous PC combustion with this method have been reported to me. I disclaim any responsibility on what might happen to you.

Instead of applying the fade in Fondu effect, you can use the Type effect. So the letters still appear one after the other but it gives the impression of flowing like paint from the top of the screen.

If this "flowing" effect bothers you, you still can change the way letters appear with the Scale function :

Once a template is applied, you can still determine the behavior of each character with the Scale dynamic option :

Alternative solution using Title Deko

Add a title to your clip, by inserting only the first letter. Then, copy and paste this title, and add the second letter. Repeat it, with 3 letters. And so on...
