This lesson explains how to create a 3D title (multi-layer) with proDAD Heroglyph.
For this, you will need the file usually located at:
C:\Program Files\proDAD\Heroglyph-2.5\clipart\background\city

Here are four examples of what you can achieve once mastered this tutorial:

The only difficulty you may encounter in this tutorial is linked to the preparation of pictures. As you understood, you need TWO images:

  1. one for the background
  2. the other one being modified in a photo editing program or similar to save a selected area as an alpha channel (this area represents the part of the image which will be shown on top of the text).

saby published a previous tutorial to help you in creating alpha channels, refer to: "Create transparent areas in still images with Gimp" (GIMP is a freeware)

For the first image, that's easy, it's your background image (jpg for example)!
For the second image, you should refer to the above GIMP tutorial to select the area that will be in the foreground. To help you understanding, find below my catamaran picture with the selection in my photo editor software (Paint Shop Pro):

Catamaran image - 2 areas selected
The areas #1 and #2 appear in the foreground (text will pass behind)

Once you select your areas (areas that are in the foreground), you must save these areas as alpha channel (all your selected areas will be stored in a single alpha channel). To do this, refer to saby's tutorial or to your photo editing software manual. Save your image in TIF format (and not tga, that's the only difference with saby' tutorial - with tga, I had difficulties to obtain the transparency).

Selected areas - mask
When saving the alpha channel,
check with the ad-hoc transparency tool

And now, it's your turn, show us what you done !
