This tutorial created for Pinnacle Studio 1-15 can also be achieved with Avid Studio and new Studio versions with some adjustments. These adjustements will be highlighted in bold and italic as follows: “If you are using AVID Studio or a new version of Studio, {...}”

After the tutorial Reproduce the intro from "The Persuaders" ® Series, some have asked me to continue the series explaining other intros. This is done today. I suggest you update your directory by imitating the generic "CSI: Miami" ®. This television series is protected, so we can only try to get close without being able to duplicate it perfectly. Remember that you can use this kind of video only in private projection.

There are many ways to build the assembly, but for maximum ease of manipulation and make accessible to beginners this tutorial, I chose to create HFX transitions. This tutorial explains how to use them. Screens capture are based on Pinnacle Studio, but the tutorial is quite feasible in Avid Studio and new version of Studio.

STEP 1: Simple mounting with HFX transition

Choose very short sequences (about two seconds each sequence). One scene in the middle of the film lasts longer (four seconds).

Hint: You can eventually replace a scene of two seconds with two stages of a second, but not too often because it accelerates the pace of the video, so do not abuse it. In this case, the same HFX will be used twice.

Color illustration:

  • short scenes red(1)
  • short scene split into two parts (2) green
  • Long scene (3) blue

Time Line

Select the first scene on the timeline and go to the plugin icon to add an effect on the video. Choose HFX Filter as an effect.

Insérer le filtre HFX

It's always a default HFX filter which applies, so to modify it, click on the following icon: Edit HFX filter icon.

If you are using AVID Studio or a new version of Studio , {...}”

Reach the Effects editor by double-clicking the first scene.

  1. Editor starts on the "Effects" tab;
  2. Click button "2D-3D";
  3. Scroll the effects list with the arrow until "HFX Filter (alphabetical);
  4. Click "HFX Filter";
  5. The settings window opensand you click the "Edit" button.
Add an HFX Filter effect in AVID Studio
The software Hollywood FX For Studio opens. Move to the directory called Declic Video by double clicking on it. Déclic Vidéo folder
  • This manipulation shows you all the HFX transitions of this directory. Search for the transition called 341-expert01.
  • For each scene, repeat the same operation by choosing other effects HFX (EXPERT 341-expert02 and 341-expert03 etc ...)
  • Same HFX can be used multiple times

STEP 2: Enhancement

The original series shows the effects duplicated and blurred. You can improve your editing using the second video track and playing on a transparent overlay. Some sequences are copied on the second video track as shown below

Multiple effects on the time line

See below the difference of two examples without overlapping and with overlapping

Example: before and after #1

Exemple #2: before and after

For the clown, I used the plugin 2D Advanced Editor to add transparency and zoom to duplicate the character.

Plugin 2D Advanced

The parameters were set as follows:

  • Horizontal Size 150
  • Vertical size 150
  • Transparency 50%

If you are using AVID Studio or a new version of Studio, {...}”

You will do exactly the same way as for the use of the HFX Filter effect, except that the effect "Advanced 2D Editor" is further classified in alphabetical order and you will not need to scroll effects to select "Advanced 2D Editor".

To the lady pirate, I added another effect HFX called 341-expert06 (set of multi-window on the left), while the main timeline uses HFX effect 341-expert08 (set of multi-window on the right). I also used the plug-2D Advanced Editor to add transparency and zoom in order to duplicate the character.

Plugin 2D Advanced

The parameters were set as follows:

  • Horizontal offset -5
  • Horizontal Size 105
  • Vertical size 105
  • Transparency 50%

If you are using AVID Studio or a new version of Studio, {...}”

After selecting the first effect

  1. The "Advanced 2D Editor" effects is set automatically above the lats loaded effect (HFX Filter) and settings are displayed;
  2. If you wan to invert the two effect, click the last icon at right;
  3. Then you drag the effect to the position shown by a small thin line surrounded by two circles.

This tutorial also works well with photos and an introduction can be tough for a slideshow. Now, it's your turn...

For your information.

20cents-video has a CSI-Miami montage theme. It is not custom made like this tutorial, but if you want something fast, 20 cents montage theme is the way to do it.
Check out all the other stuff. It's great
